I'm still down with a stomach bug. My students are probably wondering if I moved to Alaska. I'm going to bring your boys next week. That way I'll be back to normal when I see you.

Robin, that bite on your dog looks just like the (one of 100) bites my dogs have inflicted on each other. We put our 16 yr old Collie down last week and my daughter is taking the Pomeraniun as soon as I cut his long coat. That's going to put me down to **8** dogs! I haven't been down to this few dogs in 17 yrs Dog Rescue is overrated and THIS is what happens when no one wants the dogs you've diligently pulled out of ditches and doctored back to health. I can't WAIT to have only the 5 lb Chihuahua!
Anyway-I digress ......not a single one of my Malay eggs hatched-do you suppose that's why the guy was selling them at the Shawnee show?? lol Instead of being disappointed I have to say I'm rather relieved. I just spent a horrible cold winter raising chicks and I'd sure like a break. Once we get back from our jaunt to NC in May I can get pullets.
I've made a couple 2 1/2' x 2 1/2' Serama cages out of those epoxy coated metal storage cube grates, they're awesome! I'll get pictures as soon as I get the rest of the silk vines and flowers for their decorations. I put plastic grating in for floors and the poop falls down into a plastic pan the same size as the cage. I think I'm going to use scooping cat litter in the trays, it'll smell good and be easy to clean. It's all self contained and no poop, food or anything gets thrown out on the floor. Channing's cage is 2 1/2' tall but the others are going to be 15" tall. Still that's 6 1/4 sq ft and they're all under a pound, can't fly and are only 8" tall birds, so they have lots of room. Now for toys and distractions.....

I need advice on how to treat a chick I have. It is one of the ones that just hatched... last week I think. (I lost track of time SO bad!). It has been chirping NON STOP for the last couple of days. It was the only one with pasty butt so I went and washed it's butt off but I noticed the next day it wouldn't stop chirping. I am afraid that I hurt it somehow. The pasty but got to become the runs. So bad that it is running onto the babies belly. I try to keep the little one clean so I wash it off and then blow dry it a little until it is dry. What I need advice on is it's leg. I think it is the source of stress to the source of the runs and the chirping. It will hold it's leg behind it a little and it looks like it is hyperextending the hock joint a tad. It will limp over to eat and drink so I know it is still getting at least that. I am giving it some vitamins at least once a day to see if the extra vitamin B will help with healing. Today is probably the best day it has had so far. It moves around it's brooder a little more than it has been. I tried a make shift cardboard cast so it couldn't hyper extent the joint and that didn't seem to help. Then I tried hobbles but is will still hyper extend that joint. I looked and the tendon is just fine and in place. I have been looking EVERYWHERE on the net and the only thing I will try next unless anyone can give me a better idea is use a coban brace so it cant hyper extend anymore. It may have a little splay leg from this so I may try making hobbles as well but I didn't know if that would be too much. Any way, any advice is appreciated.

I found my Olive the other night but unfortunately she died during the night. I'm kicking myself for how much I paid for these olive eggers and they all died and one ended up being a male. I got 9 juvie pullets from this guy, 2 ended up being male and now I have 2 living pullets. Good grief. They either are not hardy stock or I suck at chicken raising.

Moving on.....I want to make "I love the bearded ladies" tshirts. Idea is to have silhouette of a bearded hen on one and another design is a yes or no chart on the ameracauna, aracauna, EE debate with humor. Would anyone want a tshirt?

Dusti, I know we all say we're sorry and that just isn't enough, but for some of us that's the best we can do because we've all been there. I was praying you'd get her bac, but I should of asked for healthy too. You don't suck at chicken raising. You are full of information and most of u make me feel like a fool on here. It will get better. I'm planning on going to the Checotah auction to find a goose. Hubby will make sure i don't buy any chickens. I know hugs aren't enough but they are good for u.

and my car wouldn't start this morning so now I'm going to be late to work. And all this week the 2 alarms I have set for 3 am have not been going off. I drowned my iphone 2 weeks ago. I've lost a lot of chickens this year. 2014 is not starting out good for me.

Again, everyone has times like these. . If u only knew what I've been going through health wise for the past 2 and a half years after being healthy all my life. Now I;m not just short, but short and fat.

And I've lost some much that I loved. U guys on here and my chickens have brought me back to life. It will get better. And would love a t=shirt if u can find one big enough for me.

I don't know much about the leg, but for the runs, ACV and some small grit help alot. Make sure u are putting electolytes in the water becaus they dehydrate so fast. Oh and apple sauce. I'm glad Tommy came out of surgery ok. And yes God will provide. Sometimes it doesn't feel like it, but he does. Again, my offer is still good if you need any help. You should go to the Checotah auction tonight for a little chicken therapy. When I first heard that on this post, I though everone was nuts, but they're right. I just get paranoid and have to take my clothes off outside and oxine my shoes immediately/\Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?

Kyxmette--- Floyd is doing awesome. I ended up keeping him in the house. It sure crows a lot. I put a roost in his pen and he seems happier. I'm just getting ready to feed now, so we'll see how he likes my fermented feed. I fed dry last night. but he gobbled it all, U know if u really want him back, I'll never deny u that privaledge, Nut I love him already. Haven't gotten him to eat mealworms out of my hand but if I throw them, he'll eat them. It will just take time. Darn, it's starting to get windy. I'll either have to try to chase everyone in, or leave one of the dogs out for protection until we get home.

Dusti...sorry to hear about Olive. Losing birds this year is not a matter of how well cared for they are, but the unusual weather affecting their health.
Kane...sorry to hear about your Maly eggs. Do you know how old the birds are? You might try again after the wedding. Could be the frigid temperatures affecting vigor.

Heavens! The wind was terrible yesterday and the overcast today has been dreary.
Three calves yesterday and none today...yet.
Eggs in the incubator/hatcher are just sitting there in their egg crate....boring...hatch day is today but may be late because I set them at night. Will move another 24 to the hatcher due to hatch on the 1st and will move another 30 to the hatcher on the 3rd.
Pulled a muscle in my back this morning while moving around some plant trays. My tomatoes and pepper plants would love some time in the sunshine. But the heating pad is working wonders on my back.
Is anyone going to the chicken show in Norman on April 5th? Roger and I will be going to see how Carl's birds show.
My lettuce, peas, beets and carrots are up in the garden. Need to plant more English peas and lettuce for a progressive harvest. It would be good to get them planted before our next round of rain next week. Anyone else planting a garden?

Has anyone heard from OklaDoodle lately? Or how about Elwood?

Nana, the Malay pair were born in 2012 according to their bands. The cold may have played a part for sure.
Most the roosters here lost their women today. I got to looking close and there were too many girls with their feathers worn off. It's gotten worse the past few wks, probably the nice weather. So girls went into yards with other girls, 5 boys went into the rooster yard with 4 other boys (here's hoping they get along) and tomorrow we're dividing 10x10 pens in half for the roosters that don't do well with other boys. Only about 5 boys get to have girls. And *they're on shaky ground lol Kim, I separated the Malay pair also (sorry), he had her down to bare skin in spots under her wings. The big Cornish boy will be batch'ing it for awhile, too.
The boys are so nice when there's no girls around, feeding the other boys and dustbathing together. Maybe the co-ed living around here just needs to end. It'd be nice if I could keep as many boys together as I can girls.
