***OKIES in the BYC III ***

That's your call on the preventative Corid. Given the condition of those dirty birds *I* probably would, 5 days only. It depletes them of vitamin B so not a bad idea to follow with a few days of vitamins in their water (But not at the same time as the Corid).

It is so much fun to watch chicks play and "flight train!"

@hotcurltr he looks so good! I'm sure you're taking fantastic care of him. I remember a couple of times where the girls would be laying and he'd be down on his belly, head in the nesting box... I never knew what he was doing until today. I sure miss him, but he'll have a great home with you.

Anyone near Okulmogee? My husband took a job in Okulmogee and we bought a camper for him to stay in somewhere close. We spent sometime today driving around and I didn't see a single chicken. Weird?

Kass - Hercule and his Hennie are getting along well. I checked her egg today, and it was fertile. I need to start saving some. The dark NN eggs haven't hatched. Today is day 21. I'll let them stay in the hatcher a few more days, but it's not looking good. Six out of seven went into lockdown. Maybe there's still hope for one or two. The jubilee NN eggs don't go into lockdown until Wednesday. Keep your fingers crossed that that bunch is in better shape.

I had two helpers to clean the baby house today. Normally it takes me an hour to sweep out all the old litter. Today, though, it took four hours because we had to move the shavings in smaller piles, walk to the house and back about forty times, and we had a melt down do deal with when one of the capons shouldered his way into the baby house, which sent my oldest GDaughter into a fit of bossyness: Get out! Get out! You didn't wipe your feet! Get out! Go home! Stop eating the baby food! If a cockerel can roll his eyes, this one did. When she went for the kiddie rake, I knew I had to intervene. We went inside, again, for a story book and a drink of water. When we came out, there were half a dozen capons peering into the baby house, so I let my granddaughter shoo them away, and then I made her the guardian of the door.

We didn't have any elephants barge into the baby house either. She was an excellent guard.

When I went to check the chicks tonight, I noticed that an odd group had formed under one of the brooder lamps. A Saipan (top left), Bresse (big comb), Barred Rock, a pair of Golden Lakenvelders, and two Cinnamon Queens. The Saipans are growing faster than any breed I've ever raised, but they don't seem to know they are larger than their peers.

I checked leg bands on all the Saipan tonight. Two leg bands were missing, so I put new ones on. The rest looked snug, so I cut the old bands and put loose bands in their place. Next month the Saipan will get their own pen. I"m going to cover an old picnic tarp frame for their outside run.

Hehe cute story Coral!

Oh my goodness cuteness over load when I opened the incubator just now- a whole tray full of chicks, including a bunch of silkies! These are just mixed color silkies but they are so stinkin' cute!! One thing I noticed right away on at least one chick, there are extra digits, or at least extra toenails?!?! I'm talking not the regular 5-toed, it has 7 toenails on one foot, two of which are growing off the side of one toe! The other foot is normal. Guess it is a "special" chick!

Will take some pictures tomorrow!! This whole batch is for sale, I have some better quality, color-specific ones hatching right before easter. I need these babies gone before those ones hatch! $6 each or 3/$15.

Need some help and hopefully you guys can give me some info! I got an order of silkie chicks from Cackle on Friday. 4 have already died and now two more are bleeding from their butts so I'm pretty sure it's cocci. Where do I get amprol? My hubby is at atwoods atm and he can't find any. The person helping him has called all feed stores around us and everyone is saying they don't have it. What else can I give them if I can't fine the amprol?

I use Sulmet for cocci. However, they seem to young to have picked up cocci. Have any children been handling them? Their in sides are very tender at under a week or so, plus the stress of being shipped. I've had many baby chicks die from being handled, till I started supervising and teaching how they picked them up.

I hope things get better.

Coral, I just love hearing the grandkid stories since I got to meet them. I swear I can just SEE it all happening!
My 2nd Malay chick is almost out-I'm so excited :) 1:30 AM and here I am watching a chick hatch. Some things never change. It was a staggered hatch, I'd set eggs the day they were laid all that following week after the 1st batch was set. NONE in the 1st batch hatched. We'd had below freezing temps that week several nights so maybe the eggs got too cold by morning when I picked them up. She lays them late in the afternoon. But I should get at least 2! There's a 3rd one in there that was laid & set on 3-17, the egg is dark but I'm sure I saw veins. We'll see in a week. So we can compare Oriental stories and I can't wait to see your Saipan grow!

Kass, it looks like you're raising ostrich

In all fairness regarding POOPS location-I've only been on the board 3 yrs but it's been located in central Oklahoma each of those years, hasn't it? It's the people in all other locations that end up either having to miss it or travel 3-4 hrs. Maybe we could poll to see locations of the people who actually plan to attend. That said-I wouldn't mind the drive a single bit. Coral is an awesome planner and in all honesty whoever has to do most the planning get a bit of sayso in location (as they've done in all other years). I sure don't want to plan something that elaborate, I'd much rather drive the extra distance.

The main reason I never made it to any of the POOPS was because of the distance. One in Tahlequah I would be able to attend, distance wise.

Coral, I loved this pic! The little white one has a look on its face like "Are you seeing Stretch, over here?!"
