***OKIES in the BYC III ***

David, I just had a hen sneak off (under a pallet!) and hatch 3 chicks this week. I put her in a 4x4 pen with her chicks and stuck 3 of my 1 mo old Bantam Ameraucanas under her also, they'd grown up in a brooder. She shoved the whole group under her wings and by the next day you wouldn't have ever known her adopted babies hadn't been hen raised. It may depend on the hen, this one is an 18 mo old Cornish mix who'd never hatched eggs before. I think you'll have fine luck slipping the chicks under the hens.
Thanks Mitzi, I will give it a try. Did you put them in during the night or during the day?

8:00 in the morning :) It was when I was moving the mama to her own area. So you might do something to distract the hens for awhile if you do it during the day. But given they're Cochins I don't think you'll have a problem.

Blah, sad day here. Me and the kids just spent all evening crying over the duck we rehomed.

Its kinda ridiculous but we really loved her. Edited to add: glad Goe found a great home!

Am I the only one with horse flies already? The wet spell has turned my pastures into a swarm of horse flies.

Will they bother the chickens?
we have been getting them, threw together a concoction of dawn, vinegar and water, sprayed everything down, it helps quite a bit

Quote: still trying to figure it out, the swelling is going down a little, have him on duramycin, skin isn't as inflamed- but he also is real thin. I wormed him with safeguard, long thin worms? hope that clears him out- he's a favorite of mine, a delaware and a real sweetheart

thought you guys would enjoy these pics, still don't know if the big guy is an ee or aracauna, but his little feathers in his head are starting to resemble a mohawk

Cute chick!
Can internal parasites cause skin problems in chickens?

Hope everyone has a great time at POOPS Saturday.
Unfortunately, we wont be able to attend. Hubby's lupus has been kicking his butt the past few weeks and he is not up for the long drive.

Here is my project for today...and yesterday.
Hubby talked me into getting 8 cases of ripe/overripe green house tomatoes at the OKC market when we went to his doctor appointment.
Yesterday, we cut the veggies and today I made 4 and a half batches of soup starter. All 160 pounds of the tomatoes were skin slipped and cut to add to the veggies. Finished about an hour ago and ended up with 69 quarts....yummmmm. soup starter.

To the tomatoes I add green pepper, poblamo pepper, banana pepper, jalepeno, onion, celery and garlic.
Our girls like to cover a roast or pork loin in a slow cooker with a jar of the soup starter and let it cook all day.
MIL likes to make goulash with a jar and cooked ground beef and cooked macaroni topped with cheese
I run a few jars thru the blender and use it as a base in chili.
And it makes a great soup starter...add meat and potatoes, greenbeans, etc. or add chicken and noodles and carrots, etc.
