***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Okay, here is a crate revision into a coop.....Hope this makes sense...I'm still working on the crates....should finish all of them tomorrow.
The coops will be large enough for at least 3 - 4 large birds for roosting at night. I put a roost board on each side section.

From this to this..... a 24' x 26" x 45" wooden crate There are two more in the background that are 24 x 24 x 45

The 12 " x 46" opening is actually going to be a lift roof section that will have wire screen. The roof section will be hinged so I can raise it and swing up a small board to support the roof. Should help keep the coop cooler in summer.

using a 24 " x 48" piece of plywood, I cut the four pairs of end corners for the roofs of all four crates.. 12 inch wide sections cut on the diagonal. On the right, I you can see I used scraps to secure the triangle to the top of the box. Then using boards from the lid, I made support pieces for the roof.

The front supports are 12 inches with a notch cut to sit on the frame. the piece next to the hammer is the center support...the long side is the width of the lid and the short piece is another 12 inch cut with a notch. It is in place in the second picture above.

For a door, we cut out the center section and will hinge the piece and put stop blocks on the inside and a latch on the outside to keep the door closed at night. The front panel is a 24 x 48 piece of plywood, cut in half length ways. Im making four crate coops so I used two sheets.

I will add a nest box with a lift lid on one end of the crate. There will be two nest boxes. I'll cut out the section indicated with marker. Then add the nestbox made from more plywood.

Great video.

scored some nice shipping crates yesterday at a little place in Shawnee called "Might Have it". The 24 x 24 x 45 inch crates are plywood with a wood exterior frame reinforced with metal and were $12 each. The crates have 3" x 3" boards on the bottoms and a nice lid. Couldn't buy the wood for that.. This place also had 2' x 4' sections of 1/2 plywood for $2.99. I'm making some coops out of these for a few pens that need some winter cover. I'll take pictures as I work so you can see these.
They also have 24 x 24 x 24 for $8 and a 24 x 24 x 36 for $10.
1/2 inchx 4 x 8 plywood is $18.95 a sheet and they also have all kinds of hardware.
They have over 100 in another storage site and will bring them in if you call and tell them what size you want and when you can pick them up.

Kathrynn,
I wish I had known you were interested in some crates, I have been picking them up for free from one of my customers. They have several sizes I have been using 48x44x30 crates placing them elevated on 2x4 framing supported by 4x4 and 1x1 welded wire across the front. I will be adding a good number of these over the next few weeks. I am picking some up for Bob as well.
I think they will be great for breeder trios, and conditioning.

On another note Show season is nearly here again, the first show is in Norman Oct 4th at the Cleveland county fairgrounds. I would like to invite everyone to come look around and enjoy.

I failed to mention, I have a few bantams, both Rosecomb and OE that will not serve my purposes. If anyone is interested in a few for pets or whatever give me a call, I will not keep them much longer.

Quote: Not open on Sunday.....call ahead to make sure they have the sizes you want on hand. Let them know how many you want and they can tell you about when they will have them. Their lumber yard is small and they have these stored in another location and will bring them to the store for you to pick up.

Quote: We just happened on to these and I had that epiphany moment. Yours are larger and free to boot! When Bob and you get all you want, I might take a couple.

Do you have any Brown Red? My cock was dead in his cage this morning. I had treated him for mites two weeks ago and he was looking less anemic this past week. There are some little Brown Red pullets in the ones I got from you earlier this summer but no cockerels.
