Possums, weasels, owls, skunks ... will all just eat the head and leave the body. Sometimes they do it because they can pull the head through the fence but nothing else. We lost half a flock of young turkeys to a possum that way. And my favorite duck of all time. I was very sad.

Possum are a real menace around here. I just trapped two large ones in a live trap last week. I keep my chickens locked up these days, but I'm not taking any chances, especially after watching a video of a boar coon that worked all night and finally lifted up an electric garage door high enough to get under.

Hey y'all, my little Gracie, who turned out tho be a Garrett lol,is just as sweet as he can be, I think from other BYC opinions he is a Brahma/Cochin mix. My uncle with the "auction arm" bought him on a whim at the Coweta auction. I nursed him over his sniffles and he is in tip top shape now and dead sexy! lol

Anyway I need to get him- I think a Brahma or Cochin ladyfriend or two, (one of each would be cool). I am in the Stroud area if anyone has a pullet or hen they might sell me. I am on a budget, but he is a lonely bachelor... Of all my chickens he is the the one I am always tempted to bring in the house.

I just love him.

An update on the Olaf project....


The body is coming along...pinned and hanging so it is easier to work with...Still need to line and stuff the top and make slits for the sleeves. Then need to finish making the suspenders for the bottom and attach the band to the waist..and put on the legs.....

Well, it's now been more than 2 weeks, since I posted about the "visiting" chickens. Those appeared to be 2-RIR's and 1-Euskal Oiloa. I haven't seen any of them, since that day. Don't know if my neighbor might be a member here, and read my post, and is now keeping those chickens under wraps, or what, but those 3 chickens, have not come back, that I've seen.
However, last week, I saw two new visitors, one day, shown in the photos. I went out, and gently shooed them away. The next day, when I let my birds out of the coop, one of them, came out of my coop. I don't know, if she was a third hen, or if one of the hens came back, and got over my fence. I keep pretty good tabs on my birds, and feed them good quality organic food, but, I don't spend my day, watching them. So, I'm not sure when this hen felt the need to get in with my birds. But, I figure that if she is choosing to join my flock, in the Free Range Chicken Jail, then she's happier here. If anyone comes looking for her, I'll try to catch her, and give her back. But, if they don't come looking, I see no sense in looking for her keeper, if she is happy with my flock.
The fence is only about 4-1/2 ' high, but, it's enough to keep most of my birds in. The pen is good sized. 30'x75'. More than enough room, for all of my birds to have roaming room. Well, except the few, who simply are natural escape artists. But, they will fly out, during the day, then fly back in, for access to return to the coop, in the evening. They don't wander more than 15-20 feet from the pen and coop.
My best guess is that she's a Red Speckled Sussex. Not laying any eggs now, but, we'll see what happens as time progresses. I just wish that those two RIR's and one Euskal Oiloa, would choose to jump the fence, and join my flock, too. Those were some beautiful birds.

My three MaransXAmeraucana Olive Eggers I kept...

I think the black is female. The other two, I'm afraid, are boys. However, I'm uncertain about the splash. The blue's got three definite rows. Ugh.

Here's my question. Will the MaransXAmeraucana cross definitely produce an Olive Egger, regardless of comb type? I think it will, but I am a little confused on the pea comb/blue egg connection.

Hi everyone! I live in Northeast Oklahoma and am new to the chicken world. I just wanted opinions on the best egg laying chickens for my area. Any advice, tips or pre cautions are much appreciated.

Good egg producers are Australorp, for brown eggs and Minorcas for white eggs. Both will lay large eggs and in good numbers...4 - 6 a week. Minorcas come in Black and Buff. Sex Link have been bred to be consistent egg layers too. Give good shelter from drafts and rain, with proper feed and care, they should produce for several years. My Australorp are now 6 years old and still lay enough to earn their keep. My last Minorca is also 6 and lays very well.
As birds age, their egg production goes down.
