***OKIES in the BYC III ***

My broodies hatches aren't going well at all, there are only 2 more that might live, we'll see not very good chances on either one. This has been a HORRIBLE hatching year for me and my broodies. I am going to have to set another batch in the bator at the beginning of the week. Today 3 were SHRINK WRAPPED, now how in the h**l can a chick shrink wrap when we have had 17 inches of rain in 3 weeks and floods and near 100% humidity for their entire incubation and sitting under a broody!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the well wishes! Today I am sore but the meds help the pain. The kids sure don't let me rest for long! :) I've heard from several people that it will always hurt.. not looking forward to that

I'm glad you're on the mend! Do you have a relative who can help with the little ones? It's hard enough being injured, but tending to wee ones makes it extra tough *hugs*

I've never used a bator so have no clue how I would do and my first (only) broody attempt yielded one baby out of 10 eggs. Wish your success were better. I remember you did quite well last year.

By the way, to anyone who might know: HOW long do girls stay broody if you don't give them babies?? I've got four Buff Rocks that just won't quit & I have no more room to let them have bought chicks.
Everyday I'm losing eggs to being broken as the hefty Light Brahmas push their way into the broods nest.

The wet ground and muddy feet do a number on eggs the hens are incubating. None of my outside broodies have been very successful since the rains started over three weeks ago. Any clutches that were already hatched have done okay since moving the chicks and mothers inside. Eggs started before the rains, but due during the rain, have not hatched. I candled before I left on my trip and it began raining...so those live chicks simply died in the shell.
Incubating has been touch and go too. I am keeping the humidity at about 65 to 70 % during lock down. Have had a few shrink wrap after pip, but not many.

Oxytetracycline...1 tsp to 1/2 gallon of water

I prefer to use Tetroxy HCA - 280 (Oxytetracycline HCI) antibiotic.Since I am mixing 1/2 gallon at 200mg per dose, 1 tsp is sufficient.
I also prefer using as low a dose as possible that still effectively treats my birds.
I begin treating by pen, when I notice one bird in the group with any sign of respiratory issues. By treating by pen, I can keep a close eye on each bird and note improvement on the affected bird and for any signs in others in the pen. Should it be necessary to remove and treat a bird not improving, then I can modify the dosage to fit that bird.

We just looked at theses dosing pictures and think that the mfg has made a major error!

This one lists the doses in tablespoons, but we think it should be teaspoons:

And this one should say 1/4 ounce and 1/2 ounce, not 1 ounce and 2 ounces:

Gonna call the mfg and have them verify it.

I think your powder is more concentrated than the one I posted a picture of. I'm curious, so gonna go do some math! Do you have a gram scale by chance?

A few pictures..

A Delaware Bantam hen with month old chicks. Two Birchen Bantam hens sharing eggs...Bashful always turns her back to me when I open their door for any reason.

Ying and Yang with some of their chicks...they would love to be on the floor, but there are juveniles that need to go out as soon as pens dry out first. They successfully brooded together in their pen and are vigilant mothers.

Miranda's temporary pen...on the dirt floor in the hen house and then her with her 24 chicks. She was a rooster favorite thus the bare back, but her chicks don't seem to mind it and she will recover her plumage when she molts. .The pen is made from freezer shelving and is wired to the wall. Then the open feed sack keeps other hens from trying to roost on top.

The dirt floor is higher than the ground outside the barn and has stayed dry. The brooder room next door has a concrete floor covered by wood shavings. They have a box for dust bathing.

No Kathy, I don't. Would it help if I typed out the instructions showing the grams?

Hey, OklaDoodleDoo...here are some of the flowers you should soon see fromsome of those seed:

Old Fashioned fragrant Petunia ..just one of the colors Yankee Doodle Larkspur

Pink Carnation Poppy Purple Carnation Poppy

Red Carnation Poppy...I think it is my favorite.

Tetroxy HCA-280 powder is 36.57% tetracycline
Oxytetracycline powder is 5.5% tetracycline

Now I have to figure out what that means in terms of mg per teaspoons.
