***OKIES in the BYC III ***

This was my Blue Breda Guldre cockerel.

This is not the best photo but below was my Splash Breda Gueldre Pullet. TheY are a really mellow breed. The are so gentile you can even put two cockerels in the same pen with out problems. They have feathered feet and vulture hocks. They lay white eggs. The unique thing about them is that they are the only combless breed of chickens.

I have been checking in on this thread every couple of months for a couple of years, but never posted because...well...even though I am an Okie wasn't living in Oklahoma until three months ago. My job relocated me to McAlester, OK this summer. I hatch a big batch a chicks from my flock the end of April. That group has been with a chicken sitters while we were house hunting, settling into our new home, and building coops and chicken runs. We got back a dozen cockerels a few weeks ago (only four are left after some required thinning). We got back to dozen pullets tonight. Our new coop only houses 16 so we again need to do some thinning. We have about several Black Copper Marans pullets and a few Blue/Splash Breda Gueldre pullets that are looking for new homes. :)

We are happy to have chickens again. Especially with the price of eggs.

Welcome back GaryDean! :) When you get a chance can you shoot me a PM about your BCM pullets? I know yours are excellent and I'm trying to improve mine. I'm headed to OKC on Friday, not sure where you are now but maybe we could meet up?

As a Tulsa resident & new chicken owner, I looked at the code and do not see where roosters are excluded. 6 Adults; 14 chicks "under 8 weeks", juveniles =NA, total =NA; rooster are also not addressed.
All we could conclude was that if you get a neighbor's complaint someone might come to your door. There are objective measurements for noise pollution level, but I've have been unable to find any mention on this board of a Tulsa residents who has ever had to go through the process with code enforcement on the issue. This is NOT the same, but IS closely related to, "there is no record of Tulsa code enforcement acting oppressively."

I did talked to two different neighbors on opposite adjacent blocks you both have roosters and they've never had a problem. There's no way I would try it in South Tulsa though...

That is my understanding as well.

Gorgeous birds! No wonder they are beginning to get a few breeders since Greenfire imported them.

The Belgian Malines were one of the breeds used in the development of the Breda. Malines are also a succulent meat bird. They are only recently brought to the U.S.

Ansel update - he has a girl!! Snowflake has been broody all summer, or has been hiding in the coop from stripes- not sure, he is a capon and domineering- anyone want a grade A bug catcher??

Anyway- was thinking i need to pair Snowflake and ansel up- Ansel is too big for seramas- but this seems to work, so far he is such a sweet boy, and she seems ok with it-

Awesome!

Does anyone around raise Welsummers and/or Rhodebars? I lost my Welsummer pullet to a predator attack and am pretty bummed about it. And Rhodebars have always been on my want list.

2 of my chicks disappeared after we forgot to lock them up one night.

I found one dead with only its butt eaten-the gizzard was pulled through but not opened. The other chick (the pullet) Ive yet to find but at this point I think she's not coming back. So, everything Ive read suggests a weasel but Im wondering if they're really in town (I am in the center of Norman) and wouldn't a weasel have killed them all? My 1 NN pullet was untouched and now she's crazy lonely. I have read about possums eating only the butt but has anyone experienced this with their flock? Im so bummed.

Lonnyandrinda...I should have offered them to you first before I post them. We are probably about a 2 hour drive from you in McAlester.

This is the group.

They are looking good for 18 weeks old, but until they start laying and I can't tell how good they are. We only get about 1 out of 8 that pass the test in the laying box to qualify as a breeder. :)

Nice Marans!

Hope everyone is enjoying the showers! We sure needed them here. I tried getting all the birds back in their pens before the rain hit...like putting the toothpaste back in the tube! Ended up leaving the gates open and going out between showers to close them and close the coops.
We had our first fall calf born today...a first time mom...really doing a good job keeping up with her baby.
Quail in the incubator should start hatching tomorrow.

Best Welsummers on my side of the state come from Lisa LeRay in Tahlequah. She's not on here I don't think, or at least not much, but she's on Facebook in the Oklahoma poultry groups. Shoot me a PM if you want her number.

I lost my nekid nekid a couple of days ago. I've been stomping around, angry and weepy, not able to talk about the little guy. He caught and tried to eat a big grasshopper, and the hopper blocked his windpipe. I buried my featherless boy by the barn and put a flat stone on top. I didn't want the coyotes digging him up. He was such a friendly little guy, and he loved the weather we've had recently. He'd caught and eaten grasshoppers before, and I'd marveled at how quick he was in grabbing them, so it was a shock to discover what caused his death. He was becoming quite rugged, in spite of his lack of plumage.

The hoppers at our place have become monstrous in size. One landed on my ball cap with a thunderous "Clomp!" It walked from the crown of my hat to the outer edge of the bill, tipping my hat forward and down over my eyes. I took my hat off and shook it to remove the grasshopper. He stayed, stuck tight, until I slapped the hat against the side of a tree.
