***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hope our Tn weather man doesn't know what he is talking about. He says okla will get up to 7 inches of snow this weekend. wish he would forcast us some. the flowers are starting to sprout here because we have been so warm.

Panhandle maybe but not in central area. The last branches that broke off during the ice storm had buds and a flock of robins came thru yesterday. Awful early but I dunno

Yes, I and several others on here are long time Whovians.
I guess a Sonic "screwdriver" might be a bit hard.

I knew there was a reason I liked TN. Other than the fact I met my wife there! 42 years in December. She was 17 and I was 32. Well maybe not quite that old!

Something I've learned this year is to check the coop bedding wood chips in the morning. If there is frost on them there isn't enough air flow. I adjust my window accordingly.
You all talked about the frost from their body heat and breath causing the issues. It's the same as tent camping in the winter.
I think I've got it down now and appreciate the education.

As part of our new year celebration, I clean out the pantry and give the animals a treat. I found two boxes of cornbread stuffing, some pasta, and a few packages of shrimp-fried rice. The grandkids helped with the fridge cleaning, and they created a gift slop bucket for the piggies. When did I buy pomegranates? Since I can't remember, the piggies get them.

We will make the chickens a big pan of cornbread with the old cornflour. Mikaela asked if we could add the dried peas that don't have a date anywhere on the package. I think the chickens will enjoy corn-pea bread

Nana hope it gets better soon!

I don't know what everyone uses to heat water in for dunking freezer bound birds but I was using aluminum turkey fryer pot really wasn't doing the job and wasn't big enough for turkeys. I was trying to think of a better solution but thinking makes my head hurt

. Then I remembered (didn't involve thinking) that I had put a very heavy stainless steel double deepsink in the metal scrap pile to take to salvage. Each side will hold a good 20-25 gallons. I got it from my late FIL who was a commercial crabber on the coast of NC. I can heat the water with a pair of burners or a blow torch.

@Ironsights - Consider a tank heater; the kind that can be submerged. I saw one that maxed out at 160 degrees Fahrenheit, which works because you want the water to be between 148 and 155, and the water cools with each bird. The downside is speed: the water won't heat quickly. I have an enormous stock pot that I put over a camping burner. It works, but I have to watch the temperature closely, and adding cold water to tweak the temperature down just a bit is time consuming.

@mjgigax - Are you making a journey of chickeny goodness to Coweta next Friday? I'm planning to get there around five. It would be nice to visit : )

We got most of the birds fed and watered while it snowed, but then the snow turned into rain. My all-terrain stroller couldn't maneuver in the slushy mud, so I had to transfer the youngest grand baby to a body sling and cover us with an XXL rain slicker. The girls followed at a discrete distance, sharing an umbrella. The piggies broke open the pomegranates but left them for the chickens when they saw the other goodies: banana peels, toast, rice, and apple cores. Finally, everyone's fed, and the kids are napping, so I feel like the day hasn't been totally swallowed up by the weather.

@artsyrobin - Stripes really enjoyed the pomegranates, but he wasn't a fan of the snow and rain.
