***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hi fellow Okie's! I was born and raised in Tulsa, recently bought 2.5 acres in Mannford. We got our first chicks a couple weeks ago and will have our very first chicken coop finished in a week or so. I am so excited! Also, I did not suspect when I started, how increasingly interested I would be in finding different breeds yo add to my flock! Our coop won'tallow much in tthe way of chicken math yet but we hope to build an addition to it next year as well...

Hey everyone, I'm wanting to get an opinion (and Okies have the best opinion)! I have a mixed flock and I'm wanting some mixed chicks, so I need a roo.

My current flock is a buff orp, buff brahma/orp mix, production red and X2 mutts. All are great layers and I'm wondering what I should throw into the mix for a roo.

I'm thinking an Easter Egger roo, but what do yall think?

I have heard welsummer roos have a great temperament and they are gorgeous birds! I'm pretty sure one of our wellie chicks, if not both are roos so we will be keeping one if so.

I have heard welsummer roos have a great temperament and they are gorgeous birds! I'm pretty sure one of our wellie chicks, if not both are roos so we will be keeping one if so.

Oooh! I did a google search on Welsummers and they're SO PRETTY. They make me think of fire.

Laid back in the recliner with a heating pad nursing my aches and pains. An 1100 pound cow looks a whole lot bigger when she is running over the top of you! We had taken the trailer to pick up a cow with a swollen back leg. Using cubes to coax her from the back of the herd into a temporary pen so we could load her, a few of the other cows got spooked and turned to run. One knocked me off balance and stepped on my foot pulling my muck boot off. I landed on my right knee and right shoulder as I fell. Another cow grazed my left calf and another missed my head by inches. Feeling pretty luck to only have some scrapes and bruises!
Needless to say, we will try to get the cow tomorrow.

We got a nice rain this afternoon and already have moved 15 newly hatched chicks to the brooder.

Time to start thinking of collecting the new crop of morels that will be popping up soon.

Ouch- if you can get out of your chair!! I imagine you're going to be sore for a week or two!

NanaKat, Glad you are ok! I am a recent member of BYC and just got through reading your BYC interview the other day .... I lurked for a year before joining so have read this entire thread (just kept it bookmarked on my computer before I joined). We have 5 production reds (a roo & 4 hens) which we keep in a tractor coop with a large run. Would like to have a mixed flock but really don't have room. I thought your interview was very nice and like your birds, pets, and hobbies. If you are still doing family history you might be interested in going to www.chroniclingamerica.loc.gov and putting in your ancestors names. It is a place to search newspapers from 1836-1922 and has no copyright (and is free). Thought this might be a good time to tell you that since you are probably going to need some recuperation time. Beautifulpirate, I am a victim of chicken math. They can add up quickly!

My daughter has had several silkies eggs in the incubator, they started hatching this afternoon! Two out so far! Hatching eggs.....another addiction.

These two had the most contrast in the chipmunk striping at hatch.


This is the first day out of the brooder (they haven't had heat in the day for most of this week) I would have let them out last week but they are delayed b/c of blondie.
