We have had owls land on snap traps at the entry of coops protected by 2x4 screen panels, but not had one enter a live trap.
An owl that hunts at dusk and dark makes a nice predator protection....until....it is the only hunter/predator left.
Once an owl learns that chickens are easy prey, the owl will invade a pen and hop into a coop without a secure doorway. Learned that lesson the hard way.

Came in to process the 4 me and my buddy killed so far. Heading back out Thursday.
Western Oklahoma is so beautiful in its own way.
I'm not sure what to make on my hens. I've down to 4 and I'm getting one egg every other day. Thought they should pulled outta molt by now.

Thanks for advise NanaKat .... doors to actual coop are all solid wood, though have screen doors on the runs. Thought owls only ate mice and such until hearing from ashtree and you, so good to know.

Matt, we have 7 hens (4 newbies, but probably close to egg laying age) and we are getting 1 - 2 eggs every other day. Think the layers are one of the original flock and one newbie. Had to buy eggs for Thanksgiving and when I opened the carton to make sure none were broken, it was a real shock to see white eggs after 2 years of not buying eggs and only getting brown ones. LOL

Sure hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving.

We had 13 for lunch and enjoyed spending time with the grandchildren....sent loads of leftovers home with them along with the extra pumpkin and apple pies.

A bantam Duckwing Rosecomb hen hatched out babies two days ago. she was also sitting on some Serama and a few Delaware Bantam eggs. Moved her with her 9 babies into a large cage with a smaller mesh after I found two tinies on the floor 4 feet below her brood cage. I kept looking for one last chick that I could hear cheeping. The other hen in her pen was half standing/half squatting with her wings out sheltering one of the tinies....looked like she had four feet!

Roger and his brother are on the floor in the kitchen sink cabinet changing out copper tubing to the ice maker because water was dripping out of the cabinet onto the floor this morning. They replaced the filter but didn't resolve the problem....a tiny pin hole in the tubing...fortunately under the sink and not behind the wall. I have a small room heater in the ready to dry out the cabinet and the carpet in front of the sink once they are finished.

It is gorgeous outside so I'm going out yo dump the duck pool and refill it so the ducks can get some swim time.

anyone else still hatching this year? got 92 babies in the brooder and have 24 set to hatch in 1 week with another 40 the week after and the girls are really laying so I have a few hatching eggs if someone has an incubator running with some room

How did your hatches go? Hopefully lots of new fluffy babies .
Are you still getting to many hatching eggs for your incubator? I finally have some room in mine.

We had to buy eggs too. Kinda depressing
I'm starting to think mine might be older than originally advertised.
Either that or this molt is incredibly long. They still look rough with feather loss

hatches have been good I currently have 97 babies in my brooder box

the girls were laying great then this last cool snap they slowed down but I'm still getting more eggs than I have room to set in the incubator.

I plan on setting what room I have on Wednesday and you are welcome to whatever I have left over
