***OKIES in the BYC III ***

That may be something for her to add to her program at some point but I'm not ready for it yet. LOL. At this point we would have to have them in the house & DH will wig smooth out. He is suppose to build us a building for her show birds this fall & if that happens as planned she can do it then.

I think a cool 4h project would be to do a nutritional analysis of feeder insects for the diet of chickens. (don't know how feasible cost wise and if maybe a school lab would be willing to do it or osu extension office or something like that)

Kassandra, I have not yet tried this, but, I would think on a small scale you could use the child's wading pools and you could over winter it inside a garage or shed or something in buckets from what I have heard. You could cut some plastic barrels in half long ways and use them to grow in but the wading pools are cheap. I do know from experience that the pools only last for one season as the sun gets to them. You could also setup a trench by digging in and putting in a liner or say building with landscape timbers for sides and a liner to grow in with a circulating pump for the water and even make it into a water garden of sorts if you want to go fancy looking!!!! Try going to the sites on the article I posted for information and also the addy for Paul would be a good source for info as he is into self sufficient farming and such!!! He is a nice guy! Let me know if you have questions I can help with!!! Lynn

Would you set it up as two groups, one being supplemented with feeder bugs & the other not? She will have to continue to progress with her project each year & that may be something as she gets alittle older.

I had thought about that but wondered if the water was to shallow and would heat to quickly in our Okie summer inferno and kill the plants.

Hey seen on the BYC page an article about raising meal worms!!! It was real interesting and I liked the settup using the plastic stacking drawers they were using!!! Lynn
