Dachund's are vicious when it comes to rabbits. They enjoy the kill...not just the hunt and will not stop as long as there is something to kill. When we lived in OKC we had several different kinds of rabbits and let them roam in our wood panel fenced back yard in the evenings. The neighbor was babysitting his mother's weenie dog and he dug under the fence and killed three and almost the 4th before we could catch him. It died later. I was ready to wring his neck. The sound of a rabbit screaming is one I won't forget. We haven't had rabbits since.
Our daughter's dachund was the same way with mice, snakes, kittens, squirrels, etc.

Busy busy day! Went to the farmers market this morning (Shawnee Farmer's market, very cute place), then to the feed store, then an estate sale then hubby, son and I built a small coop for a small run, then due to a mite problem cleaned all the bedding out of our barn coop, sprayed the entire place, caught 12 chickens sprayed/dusted them for mites, spread poultry dust in their runs, cleaned and bleached 4 waterers, refilled with chicken gatorade, and replaced the bedding in the run. If that doesn't take care of the mites, I may just burn the barn down.

So that brings me to my broody hen question. My broody was in the barn coop, but because of the mites, I used a basket about 1 1/2 feet by 2 ft and 2 ft high, sprinkled poultry dust on the bottom, put in fresh bedding, wiped off the eggs with a dry towel, brought momma over, dusted her with poultry dust and sat her in the box with a gate on top to keep her from leaving. I put food and water in with her. So my delima is, I technically have her moved out of the coop I could put this box somewhere private for her and she may stay on the nest just fine or should I return them to their favorite nesting box and move her after the chicks are born and then I know she will sit tight?

how far along are they? i am new to it, but any i wasn't sure of i put a question mark on the egg and put it back, glad i did cause as it turned out 3 that hatched i wasn't sure of.... i also discovered how yucky a spoiled egg can be!!

i have heard to candle at day 10 and day 18

They were 7 days when I candled them. I didn't think that all the eggs would be fertile, and some of them thru the light just looked like yolk or didn't show any veins, the ones that were questionable because they were too dark I went ahead and put under her. But obviously I missed some signs on atleast 3 of them. Next time I will put a '?' mark. I think that is a great idea. Definately have lots of learning to do.

This is so true... we have a dog who is a Rat Terror mix whose name is Dixie and she is our bonifide RAT Killer... she out does both our cats... she doesnt mess with the rabbits or squirrels like Adrian does but she has a nack for catching moles. gophers and other things like that...

I am just grateful both her and Adrian are fierce protectors of all the poultry... when we had baby chicks last spring my husband accidently dropped one and when it chirped loudly... dixie gave dad the stink eye and watched him carefully when he went to picking it back up...

Now this year seems to be the year that our Chinese Goose is the fierce protector of all the babies born this year as of recently... we have had to dub him Mr Mom... lol

Hatched 7 out of 8 chicka's today. There a blue butcher stag over blue orpington hens lol. Babies are the cutest fuzzybutts though, realy good looking. This was just for poops and giggles wasnt intended cross.

One of my turken roosters has taken a shine to me and likes to sit on my lap when im in the coop sitting down on my bucket. Sure do like these turkens, either love them or hate them no middle ground. They definetly cant lay worse than a blue orp.]

Edit to add the best rat, mouse, mole, rabbit, and unfortunetlyh chicken killin dog i ever seen was a full blood rat terrier my wife adopted from a kennel. Im not exagerating when i say she was a rat killing machine adn moles to. She didnt eat them just layed them by the fence all time. Where we lived we had lots of woods and overgrown fields by us so the field rats where bad. Our neighbors cats would jump the fence, steal the dead rats and take them home while we watched. lol.
