***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Looks like Henryetta is going to miss the rain again, I think I'm going to develope a complex or something!

Thanks everyone, heat is the only thing I can think of, she was fine just 2 hrs before, and there wasn't a mark on her or a feather ruffled.

here is what we are doing to keep them cool- this is their fav nestbox, so i have a fan blowing across 2 jugs of ice, obviously they like it, considering the lineup!

We have shade cloth up (tarps) and water their whole run during the hot part of the day, changed their coop door to a "screen" door w/ double 1/4 inch hardware cloth, and put a fan in front of the door.

Lynn if they haven't been wormed in a while I would suggest that you use the Wazine 17 first and then follow it up with an Ivermectin product two weeks later.

Two things can happen if you worm with a very good wormer, like Ivermec, from the get go.

1) The bird already being anemic can't take all of the worms turning loose at once and literally bleeds out.

2) The bird survives all of the worms turning loose but they clog up the intestines and then set up a very fast devoloping infection from the dead worms giving off toxins as they decay.

That is why Wazine is used first, it only kills adult round worms that it comes into contact with so it will thin out the parasite load. The two week wait is to let the bird recover before killing all of the parasites, both internal and external.

Good morning and thanks for the post everyone, Monty I got the roo in my post from an auction but I talked to the owner and he lives down by Shawnee, last name was Brown, thanks Les I will try that! We got heavy rain and pea to dime size hail last night for about thirty minutes, then rain for a while. I went to sleep so not sure how long. We needed the rain! Have to go back to work today, Have a blessed day all!!! Lynn

Robin - I like the fan and frozen water idea to keep the bids cool. I hung some old bed sheets on the south side of the pens to provide shade. After reading your post I think I'll wet the sheets with water a couple of times today to see if the water cools the pen any as the sheets dry out.

Good Morning BYC!

It was in the 60's this morning when we are use to it being 80's already.... Nice.... I told Doc that he might want to put on a coat before heading out... LOL

Only suppose to be 92 here on this 1st day of summer... your telling me we had a hotter spring????

Havent lost any adult birds to the heat, but a few little ones.... Moved the younger rabbits back in cause we have lost 2 to the heat.

Hope it cools off soon...

I have a few brooder boxes in an old metal shed, it is fully shaded @ all times plus keep a shop fan running. If I hose it down the temp drops 5 degrees instantly. On these way hot days we have hosed it off @ least 3 times each afternoon. Pretty sure it helps that I am hosing down the fan too, so it is blowing cool water. I haven't used any of misters with the chickens this yr like I used to in town. Think think the are about $20 @ lowes & they used to help bunches. Now that we have a well I am trying to be more careful withy eater usage during this drought. First summer with the well & don't want to run it too low.

Morning everyone.

Sure was nice here this morning but I'm sure the heat is on it's way. I haven't done anything extra for my chickens so far other than wet the dirt down on the hotest of days. I haven't lost anything to heat yet but my pens stay in the shade all day. I do notice that they really like to dust bath when it is hot so I sometimes break up the dirt for them.

Last night I went into the coop to collect my eggs. There were 2 hens in there kind of late inside the nesting boxes so I just got the eggs from underneath them. I laid the eggs in one of the empty boxes while I put down some lime and raked. The eggs ended up staying in the coop overnight. It appears that my 2 hens have become broody they have not been off the nests in 3 days. My question is, can I go ahead and stick the eggs back underneath them that I removed last night or will this detrimentally affect their hatching?
Would love to have some barred rock babies running around!

Also, when babies hatch out, do they need their own feed, crumbles, since I have my hens on layer pellets. (These hens do not free range)
