What i use in winter is a plastic fifty gallon barrel with a spigot, the top is cut out and i have a horse trough deicer in it. Sure beats hauling water or hoping the hose will thaw out.
I've got some tank heaters that are safe to use in plastic. Most of my waterers are 5 gallon buckets with metal water nipples in the bottom. My plan was to drop a tank heater into each bucket once we start to have freezing weather.
I've also got two three-gallon waterers with heated bases. Those will go into the pens that have the most shelter from the wind. They work, but not as well as the tank heaters.
Both good plans. If everything I had were in one pen it would make life easier.....having so many pens is my problem.
I am wondering if I will have to provide heat for the moderns. They are in a coop that I can close up but still not sure if I will have to have added heat.
The "having so many pens" problem is also part of my dilemma. I'm committed to bringing my numbers down to fit into six chicken pens and one duck pen. I'm running out of time, but at least I'm trying. I'm taking some birds to Stilwell on the 4th. There's a swap in Haskell at the antique tractor site just north of town on the 5th. I plan to set up there, but I don't know how many tractor enthusiasts will be interested in chickens.
Where is the Tractor group meeting? I have a 1953 Ford Jubilee that I desperately want to sell.............would love to talk with people who might want her.........

On highway 72, just north of Haskell, is the tractor site. It's right next to the cemetery, on the east side of highway 72. I just got an e-mail from one of the tractor club members. He said vendors can set up any time on the 5th. He also said the swap gets going between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. I plan to go as early.
