I had a hen that not only crowed but tried to mate with one hen who she was raised with. She even laid eggs but they were weird, kind of leathery never got a hard shell from her.
Found out later that this is not uncommon. Tres bizarre!

THats one of the best things about this thread, I learn something new everytime I get online LOL

One of my Buff Orpington hens has a well developed spur on one leg, Never heard her try to crow and as far as I can tell she is laying,

someone asked me why seramas, does this math sound right?
2 seramas = 1 banty
2 banties = 1 large fowl
so does that mean 4 seramas = 1 large fowl....

No fair! Robin's cheating on the chicken math again!

I think we need to revise the whle bantam / standard conversion rate for Chicken math...

Seramas weigh 8-10 oz. for hens anyway and they are the only ones that count in chciken math..
A Large Fowl Wyandotte Hen is 8-9 lbs, so that is 144 oz. So serama hens convert at a rate of 18:1

So there is the Serama conversion chart. 18 serama hens = 1 LF hen.
Modern and old english would be 7.2: 1 So we will say that the banatm games convert at a rate of 7 hens = 1 LF hen

I'm so glad you'll have her home to fuss over. It feels so unnatural to have one of your kids sick and NOT under your wing.
Rebecca, I know you knew how bad I wanted these guys. Honey, you can have ALL the free fertile eggs you want from these 2! I'd be honored. I'm going to start collecting as soon as she lays any and if you'd like you'll be 1st on the list to get some. Just tell me how many and I'll hand deliver them to you.

That does my heart good to hear of her getting up to such a ripe old age. I hope she has many more happy days.

Hey! Maybe my Blue Silkie is a hen after all, huh?? Maybe she's just faking me out with all that crowing

The vet is open for an hour on Sunday mornings in case anyone needs anything. One of the Silkies who'd been in with the Cochin babies has been lethargic the past few days. I was hoping he'd snap out of it and fight it off but no go. So I ran up and got the Dexamethasone, Vit B and antibiotic injections for a week for him plus an extra round for the next potential bird who gets sick. Makes me feel better to have extra. This was the older vet who opened the place years ago, super nice guy named Dr Sewel. Said just to stop by some time next week and I could pay for it then since he didn't know how much the other vet was charging and he didn't want to overcharge. So I'm hoping my little white Silkie, Webbie, will make it through. It won't be for lack of trying.
Have I mentioned I love this vet clinic???
Edit: Oh yea! And my daughter's 7 mo old cockeral who was literally on death's door, laid out on his side gasping for air a week ago is up and prancing around and crowing! I don't know what kind of magic he puts in these injections but I'd have sworn that chicken was a goner.

Where are these nice vets? I love our vet in Harrah because he really knows and loves cats. Most Vets seem to know more about dogs. I sure would love to take birds to someone that knows them well.

i love it!!!

ok just read this- anyones thoughts on these turkeys? if it works i want a pair...

By the way, here is a sure fire way to get rid of hawks, in 30 minutes or less. Get a black spanish turkey. Hawks will not go near anything that a vulture is near, and black spanish turkeys look just like vultures to hawks. We had hawks in almost every tree, I bought 3 blk spanish turkeys and in 30 minutes everyone of them were gone. And they stayed gone.

The one I go to is called Four Corners and he's on the far NW side of Guthrie. There's several vets there and each one seems to have their "specialty".

Given the fact that most turkeys will clobber chickens that might not be a very good idea. You'd have to hope the hawk saw the turkey before he saw the chicken, and that he mistook the turkey for a vulture. Since hawks have excellent eyesight I'm not sure I'd want to count on that.
However.....Black Spanish turkeys are way cool looking & turkeys make wonderful affectionate pets if raised from babies. So......if you were wanting to try a pet turkey anyway I'd go for it lol
Lemme go get my notes on turkey math.......

Hey all, I am sort of new to the forum, I do alot of lurking and learning here! I was wondering if anyone had a silver spangled polish rooster for sale? I have a couple of hens that need company and hopefully we can hatch out some in the spring. Debbie:)

Hopefully I will be off those days in December, after reading a bit sounds like they loose some of thier "splash" when you cross splash to splash so I may need a blue or black white crested roo. so if anyone hears of any I would appreciate it. Thanks

Welcome emtdeb!! Jump on in here and talk to us. We are all just plain folks, well there are a few that are royalty but most of us are commoners!lol. I really don't think there would be a problem with silver over silver. They are an established breed and should breed tru. Putting a different color over them will change the silver spangle pattern all together. By the way, where are you located in case some one has a roo for you. Sorry I don't,and I am one of the out of staters right now any way.

Another fine fall day here but have been lazy and just taken it easy today.
I saw a nice pair of black spanish at the sale yesterday. They are really pretty for an all black bird. I can see where a hen would look like a vulture. I may have to get me one and try that trick.

MIL update, she had her hip surgery and did okay. Yesterday they were doing an xray and the nurse or tech ,whoever, apparently hurt her leg positioning her and she bit them!(luckyly she didn't have her dentures in!lol). So now they are branding her a violent pateint! That will make it harder to put her in a rehap which is what they want to do for a few weeks till she can get on her feet again.
