***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Many of the birds that are in a show string are offspring of the exhibitor's best birds with the parents safely at home. I have heard of diseases coming home but it is on rare occasions.

There are many good eyes at a show and birds that show obvious signs of disease are pulled by the staff. We all do our best to take only birds that are healthy but as you know a bird can be a carrier of many diseases and not show symptoms. But when you get home taking good biosecurity measures as you suggested is a wise move.

When Teva and I go out to do NPIP testing we keep a 2 gallon sprayer full of a 10% bleach solution and spray off our boots both before entering the other keeper's yard and afterwards too. We wear muck boots so they are easily washed and sanitized.

Naked Necks, Frizzles and Egyptian Fayoumis are all breeds that are well documented to have superior disease resistance over the other breeds.

Thanks for the info. I am in Shawnee. Looking forward to the sale/show in dec.

Hope your MIL is on the mend, I take it that she has some dementia? I am a nurse and let me tell you the sweetest looking little ladies are sometimes the oneryest! not to long ago had a sweet little grandma slap the snot out of me for changing a dressing:lau hate that they have branded her a violent patient.

Yep, they've got bantam Faverolles also. For some reason the bantams nor the LF's are easy to find. But there'll quite possibly be some at that Dec show in Shawnee. Jackie/Firefly is getting some Faverolles bantams to breed I think.

I just got a pair and I'll be picking up additions to my breeding group and some LF salmons and b/b/s bantams. They are a wonderful breed but much more common up north, they aren't very heat resistant. I'm pretty excited about my new babies. They are beautiful and soooo sweet

Here is an overview of the '08 Shawnee show. And there were more birds plus the sale area behind the far wall.

I believe that it is the second weekend in Dec. at the Heart of Oklahoma exhibition center N. of Shawnee.

There is a sale area plus many there showing will have signs posted of birds for sale.

Firefly, I can't wait to see pics of your new birds!
NN Breeder, that Shawnee show picture is amazing. I'm reallyexcited about it.
Jarvis, things like Marek's that's passed through feathers and dander is what's scary. And Marek's birds can look healthy & never get sick after their initial bout with it yet infect other birds with their dander. I do worry too much, I know. But maybe if I'd have known more what to worry about I could've protected the 2 I lost.
Is there also real young birds for sale at the Shawnee show? Like under 6 months old?

Whew, just arrived home from Indianapolis and the Crossroads of America Show where over 10,000 birds, 24,000 rabbits and an unknown number of cats (yes CATS!) were shown! Over a 26 hour round trip. It was a great show with lots of great people. Too tired to go over any details but it was a dandy of a show again.
