Many of the birds that are in a show string are offspring of the exhibitor's best birds with the parents safely at home. I have heard of diseases coming home but it is on rare occasions.
There are many good eyes at a show and birds that show obvious signs of disease are pulled by the staff. We all do our best to take only birds that are healthy but as you know a bird can be a carrier of many diseases and not show symptoms. But when you get home taking good biosecurity measures as you suggested is a wise move.
When Teva and I go out to do NPIP testing we keep a 2 gallon sprayer full of a 10% bleach solution and spray off our boots both before entering the other keeper's yard and afterwards too. We wear muck boots so they are easily washed and sanitized.
Naked Necks, Frizzles and Egyptian Fayoumis are all breeds that are well documented to have superior disease resistance over the other breeds.
