You're trying to get down to 60? That must suck in the winter when we get blizzards and ice storms. I've got over a dozen dogs and had my sheep, mini horse, mini donkey...winter sucked for me also but that was before chickens. This is my 1st winter with chickens except for the 3 who migrated over from the neighbors a few yrs ago. This is going to be a whole different ball game this year. How do you keep *that many individual waterers from freezing?
Michael, thank you for the pictures-so many birds!

I've got tank heaters that keep five-gallon bucket waterers from freezing. The rest of the waterers have heated bases. I'll still have to shovel snow away from gates and doors if we have heavy snow, but at least the birds will never be without water. If anyone has the cookie tin heater plans and can post them, there may be some folks out there who will want to make some. I've got two left over from last season, and they're going to go into the pens with my oldest hens, sort of like heated seats for the ladies who deserve some extra TLC.

Speaking of TLC, I started working on our traditional family ornament swap today. The theme for the ornaments this year is snowflakes. Most of our family will make theirs from beaded wire, but I decided to make mine from clay. Here's a picture of what they look like when they are still damp clay: greenware. In a few days I'll be able to take pictures of them after their first firing. I don't know if I'll paint them or glaze them. We swap ornaments at Thanksgiving, so I guess I've still got a little time to decide.

I saw the plans on youtube or somewhere for the cookie tin heaters. I've got 2 buildings I'm going to cheat on and run heaters in, just enough to keep it above freezing, but that'll take care of the chickens anyway. Someone posted this link:

It's a plug-in that turns the elec on to whatever's plugged into it at 35 degrees and shuts it off at 45 degrees. Wouldn't that be handy? I'll need the cookie tin heaters for the turkey's water though.
I love the holidays with my kids and husband. But over the years I've just gotten tired of the whole "family" thing with my siblings and stuff. Last year I boycotted and didn't go to Thanksgiving or Christmas with the extended family. It was the best holiday season I ever had.

I was just kicking around some comments with a friend (she's also an Okie BYCer but I forget her username, I've known her since high school) on Facebook about the fact we should have gone to Blanchard/Newcastle and bought roosters for freezer camp when they were going cheap. Now I can't get to the next two sales, and of course Shawnee is not the time for roosters to eat.

Kass, I need to learn to garden like you.

Went grocery shopping tonight. Spent $200 and it wasn't enough for an entire month. It's just so frustrating. Bear in mind that I am wheat free and my daughter is a supertaster, so that rules out wheat products and beans/lentils and a lot of other "cheap" food stretchers (because supertasters have issues with texture of their food and can't help but throw up). Most coupon items we don't use because generic is cheaper than coupon price, etc. Just... not feeling too good today.

Plus, I lost two chicks from Elite, not sure what happened, but both went fast today. Luckily they were the babies and not the 8 week olds.

I did have an ah ha! moment and realize I could make jelly out of fruit juice from the store (the 100% juice, organic) for a ton of jelly (more than I have jars for!) it's less than $5. Making a batch of half pints right now since we're OUT. I got plain apple juice, and pomegranate acai (figured for that cheap, I figure why not try it).

Grocery stores are depressing anymore. I could not imagine having to buy all my meats as well. 126.00 for me yesterday. Two people and the animals. No kids at home. How do people do it?
