See that is how I feel about dentists. It has really sucked having to get all these teeth pulled. Fortunately I found a pretty good dentist who is really gentle and careful. Eye doctors never seemed to bother me, guess all those years of wearing fantasy makeup really desensitized my eyes, not to mention the laser job I had done 6 years ago.

I would love to have laser surgery so I wouldn't have to wear glasses, but I saw a little of what they do and almost coded! They won't knock you out you have to be awake for that, so that's never going to happen.

I finally got where I can put eye drops in, but my husband just laughs at me. I have to lay down, my eyes are closed b/c I have eye drops in my hand, it's an involunary reaction. I put the dropper to the bridge of my nose and fill up the eyewell area w/ drops (eyes still closed) then I put down the bottle and use both hands to pry my eyes open to allow some to get in my eyes.

I can't stand to watch anyone else touch any eyes, not just mine.

Cuban - Is this common practice? I'm boggled by genetics. There's so much to learn. I have white Chantecler, which were developed through a series of crosses of the following breeds: Cornish, Leghorn, Rhode Island, Wyandotte, and Plymouth Rock. If I breed a Cornish rooster to some of my Chantecler hens, do you think the result would be a squatty, meatier Chantecler-looking bird, or do you think it would still look like a true Chantecler?

It is common practice when there is a limited gene pool and the breed has fallen so far into disinterest that there are very few known breeders. This was done with cubalaya. When you outcross, you will yield junk and birds you could move forward with in breeding. It requires a lot of hatching and culling.

You'd need to ask yourself what you hope to gain from the outcross. With my Orloff, I want to bring back the proud upright stance in the males and a more oriental stature in the females. Also, I want the hybrid vigor and increase in size. I'll be able to set my own strain because this process is time consuming, and I will have to work with them until they breed consistantly to type. It may take me five years to see full results, maybe longer if I keep having setbacks.

Then, once the type is set, we get to play with color!

That's going to be one good looking cross. I knew Orloffs were games but I didn't know Malay went into them. I didn't ask why the previous owners were keeping all the fluffy orange chickens and getting rid of these 2, I wondered if these 2 were picking on the others. I know they're not aggressive like other games but compared to those puffy orange ones I bet they were.

Aggression hasn't been an issue in the females that I have. I haven't tried housing my males together, but they seem to do ok ignoring the free ranging bantam mutt cocks.

The females do make great brooders.

My malay females will squabble if I add a new lady to the pen, but nothing serious. Its the males I can't keep together.

I can't for the life of me imagine why this breed isn't more popular. Their muffs and beards and these long cool necks and spangles. I don't get it. Did they just not catch on?

Had the most wonderful day with the family for our Christmas get-together.
The little boys arrived first and after their lunch had to go see the "hickins" per two year old.
Then it was off to the tractors They climbed in and around the three big tractors and each had to sit in the dirver's seats.
When the rest of the grandchildren arrived, it was back to the chickens and farm implements and driving the Ranger all over the property.
Somewhere in there we opened packages and had loads of visiting.

Have been reading all the listings since last night...
Poco great gift from your granddaughter. Loved teaching scratchboard in my highschool classes. Especially when a gifted student really grasped the mechanics of the artform like your granddaughter has. Truely a gift to be treasured.
Muesky...sounds like you have had a busy week with your decorating and enjoying your daughter.
Cuban Longtails...sure hope you post some photos during the process of developing your Orloff strain.

Got to go get another piece of fudge...be back in a bit.

This is Brooster he's in charge of all the Buffs I got him from the last Fletcher auction I think it was.

I think she kinda looks like the one Nana posted a pic of a few days ago.. She is one of my underfoot chickens if my foot comes off the ground she has to see what was under it and will come running LOL
