***OKIES in the BYC III ***

DGD is working hard on her science project. She's got a control pen and a test pen of Light and Coronation Sussex hens, and each pen has a rooster. They've got identification bands of different colors, and each has been weighed. Close-up photographs of wing, hackle, and tail feathers were taken for each bird. Eggs from both pens will be weighed and measured. So far we have two eggs, one from each pen: slackers.

DGD designed a chicken corset for hanging each bird to get its weight. An eight-pound rooster managed to pop the ring off the dishcloth that was holding him to the scale, so we've added a wire loop and a safety pin to secure the dish towel. If she doesn't get a prize for her ingenuity, at least she'll get some giggles and comments when people view her display. Here's how she weighed each bird:

I'm sure somebody already answered this, but just in case: The North East Oklahoma Chicken Stock is not POOPS. This will be an opportunity to buy, sell, trade your eggs and birds. It is open to the public, and I plan to advertise so that Muskogee residents know they have something to go to on Saturday if they aren't otherwise occupied. I expect we will fill up the building with birds people want to sell and show off, so please send me an e-mail at [email protected] if you want to reserve a space. I will have the drawing of the building posted on the planning thread (see my signature line) on Monday. I'm encouraging people to reserve a space for setting up. If you don't reserve a space, be prepared to take what's left, or one can set up along one of the walls provided access doors and aisles are not blocked. Even the outside area on the grass can be reserved: Sooner and Doodle have center left and right.

Thanks, email is on the way. Look forward to another chicken swap.

Clever Girl!!

here is a project for her- the idea of the corset- make a sling for a bird that is having leg problems, like the ones i have had in the past with injuries- in a way they could just barely touch the ground to be able to put a little weight as they recover-

Well I'm really liking these 2 a lot. They're one of the prettiest chickens I've ever seen and am going to probably look for for more. If I can find a male you can have all the eggs if you want.

That would be great! Hope you can find a nice male with an upright stance.

I could've sworn I'd answered this and couldn't find it so guess I didn't. But this would be great fun for me to do it that way. I'd get the enjoyment of gathering up some more Orloff girls and I'll look hard for a good looking boy. I'll get to have the birds, help the breed in some small way but not have to deal with getting attached to babies or worry about what to do with all the extra boys. If I find any males I'll run them by you since I really don't know what to look for.
Poco, the sling your granddaughter made is ingenious lol
Matt, that bird is beautiful. I don't envy you having to separate them all though. I'm not so sure I'll be able to put any girls in with the boy I've got, he was pretty mean to both groups I tried. Maybe it's just a teenager thing though.

Hes in the shade,is a black/white mottled or is there red in there? Love anything that is blk/wht mottled. Will you have a hen to match? He is a beauty! Is it a standard or bantam?

Most cockerels can get a little over zealous when they start being interested in females, i told you about that when you were here the other day.
