***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Ha I found something that I have on hand! Plastic knifes! That will work for now! I have a pile of them that never get used.

I have hatched eggs in a simular situation as yours. I put them in a bow with a towel wrapped around it, used an old lamp and a 100 watt light bulb, put a jar of water in there for humidity, out of the ones I tried to finsh hatching I got 7 out of 11 hatched out. Did not feel like this was a bad percentage since the hen left the eggs and they were surely not going to hatch otherwise.

wow- thats a simple bator!! gonna have to save that!

ok, now that stress is reduced- fill me in on the coweta sale.... thats not that far from here.....

I don't have time to look it up but there should be information in the Oklahoma auction thread or on Craigslist as far at the start times & such. If you are wanting to know something besides that I will do my best to help.

thanks! where would i find the thread- i have never been to an auction before....

Being a newbie to all this I have an opinion on this. If I buy a bird from someone I am not expecting show quality, because I don't know what to look for anyway. If I were looking for show quality then I would find somebody I am pretty sure I can trust to help me pick it out. If I pay a little bit more for a bird it will be because I personally think it will be worth it. The only time I think it would make me seriously upset would be if a child were trying to get into showing and got taken advantage of. I understand why it makes you angry. There are mostly good honest people in this chicken business and jerks make it difficult for everybody. It's just like anything else. Do your homework. You are a good, honest person, and that's why it makes you upset.

Here is how this whole deal works.. The best birds are kept and shown, the best breeder birds are kept as breeders and paired to make the show birds. The next (3rd choice) get sold at the shows, and out of the area shipped all over the country, then there are the 4th and 5th choice which will be sold locally all of these often start at 40-50 a bird. Anything going to an auction may look ok on first pass fow a few minutes but once they are in your hands for a day or a week you will start seeing why they were cheap. They were not the choice show birds, breeder birds, or even something the breeder wanted to send someone as his birds, so they go the auction without a name attached.
