***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Quote: I had most of the stuff I used just laying around but I spent under $50. building mine out of an old fridge, the link in my sig line goes to it, There are a ton of good ideas in the member pages section I think I would never buy a large one considering how easy and inexpensive building mine was

I LOVE this one, Poco! The egg shaped peace sign idea was perfect, MJ. Because they do look like chicken tracks and they're shaped like eggs and still ties in with the Woodstock idea. Perfect. The red outline around the comb worked perfect. I really like this one. Black would look more classy but red stands out better. And anyway-how classy can a bunch of chicken folks be? lol
Kass, I'll take some of those runners alright!
I'm rather partial to black shirts myself LOL But that's just me, I like it really and the peace signs in the eggs is a nice touch

I had not heard of a chicken moat in reference to protection from hawk attack, so I googled it and came up w/ nothing. The only reference I have heard about a chicken moat is for the chickens to provide a gauntlet for insects and weeds to get into the garden. So chickens can provide the most protection for the garden w/o actually being in the garden.

On Oklahoma Gardening on PBS one year it showed a chicken moat in use. It was about 3 or four feet wide, tall enough to walk in and was covered with wire for the security of the birds. They also had climbing beans and other vines growing over the moat for shade through the summer. If you used stout enough wire you could plant the climbing cukes too.

I also have tons of johnson grass growing here I bought a dump truck load of top soil years ago and it was in it, haven't been able to get rid if it yet either that's why I want to raise some goats so they can eat the johnson grass and poison ivy

The pigs will get rid of the Johnson grass but you may need a dozer to come in and fill it back in where it was rooted out. 4 Durocs did about 2 acres for me in a year's time but it took the Kubota and I about a week to get it all back like it was.

Love the new placement and egg shaped peace signs. The black outline helps the comb to stand out from the background also.

Ksane the runner grass is yours!!!!! And if Gary goes out your way for work before then I'll have him carry some that way.

I vote for black and no peace signs!

Been out working with the rabbits. I had a lionhead doe with nine babies about four weeks old that I was keeping for my buddy till he got ready to take her home. He got her free off craigs with the babys. So I was going to take them home this morning ,got a box and reached in to get a bay out and when I moved it there was a newqborn underneath it! The doe had ten more babys last night! One was squashed, not surprising since the nine bigger babys were on top of them!I have never seen a doe ahve a second litter while still nurseing a litter. I am surprised she didn't get upset and have them on the wire. Obviously she had been with a buck when my buddy got her. We took the first litter off her and hopoe she can pull the last ones thru. I'm afraid the older ones took all the milk.
I also didvided a cage so it would hold two bucks instead of one. I think I am going about this wrong,I have five bucks and four does!
Sunny and warm here today after a day of snow yesterday.

Kass I feel for you with the bermuda,I have it bad here too. Hate it! I love iris but it invades them so bad it strangles them and cuts thr roots into. And with its narrow leaves its hard to spray and kill.

One thing that I like about Bermuda is that it holds sandy soil very well and is worth nearly as much as Alfalfa when put into bales. Crab makes good hay too and there are a lot of farmers around here planting crab in the Wheat fields to get a hay crop after cutting the wheat and to keep soil erosion down. Crab doesn't choke out the Wheat and it will survive a good discing.

A guy I knew said to space garden rows far enough apart to mow between. There are some things that can be planted as a living mulch. They will help modulate soil temp and also hold moisture due to their shading effect.

Pics of the new chicken sauna house.

Wow! I want to live with your chickens! That's a great job, you've got the nicest looking coop!
And I do agree the black shirt looks better, I'm going to buy one either way so I honestly don't care on the color.
I could only find pint jars at Walmart so I couldn't put much in each on-a few eggs, onion stalks, slices of onions, slices of cucumbers & green peppers & some beets. I figure each jar will be good for a snack instead of cookies or candy :) I'm the only one that will eat them anyway. They're so pretty! I hope they taste good.
For the record-chickens love the rubbery shells off boiled eggs after they've soaked in vinegar for a day.

I love pickled eggs. Especially the ones done in the gallon jars that were occupied previously by Polish Sausages.

Looks like those in Central and Ne Ok. need to stay weather aware. Ksane there is a storm just to your SW headed your way. Saying hail and strong winds.
