***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hey Everybody!!!

Monday is over thank goodness!

Well dinner tonight consisted of egg salad sandwich w/ avocado, chips, cookies and milk. Yummy! Asparagus sounds awesome, though! I like it raw dipped in ranch dressing or steamed with hollandaise sauce. Now that is good eating, either way.

Okay so my hens are laying like crazy, today they laid 16 eggs. I now know where all of their stashes are so no more stock piling like they have been. In my fridge is over 8 1/2 dozen eggs.

At this rate I will have nearly 15 dozen in the fridge by Saturday. I am going to put some signs up at work to see if I can sell some. The eggs are all different colors, so each carton looks really cool. Is $3 a dozen a good price and maybe $2.75 if they have an egg carton to exchange? My birds are free range and eat a pretty healthy (albeit spoiled) diet. The extra money would be nice to defray food costs.

Oh I had another chick hatch today. It is another golden one like the one that hatched yesterday. They are all cochins apparently, but as to what kind of cochin probably mutts. I am taking them to the auction Saturday, even though they are so darn cute. Just do not need any mutts even if they are pure cochin. Oh and I have three hens that have gone broody and another trying to.

I put one to work to hatch some LF black cochins. Not sure if I am going to keep them when they hatch, if anyone is interested let me know. I am going to be setting all of this pairs eggs for the next two weeks and she consistently lays 3 of 4 days.

So who is planning on going to Blanchard Saturday? It has been too long since an auction and I am jonesing a bit. Plus I need my nacho fix.

Going to start getting ready for bed. Hope everyone has a great evening and a wonderful Tuesday. Which is good because it is not Monday, if for no other reason.

Night all!

Just to give everyone a heads up, POOPS is in the works, we worked out some details on the food today & I will be posting soon about that. The Shirt design is comming along but not final yet, I hope to have a final this week. Hope everyone is getting excited about it.

Kass~
Can you tell me some tips on planting asparagus? We love it around here and I would love to plant some but don't know anything about planting and caring for it.
Thanks,
Lori
You need to pick a permanent spot, the roots will live many many years (like 40 or more). I dig a trench the depth of a shovel blade, soak the roots (crowns) overnight in water then when I plant them in the trench I mound a little hill of dirt in the mound and nestle the crown on top of it spreading out the long roots in all directions and cover w/ dirt, I space them so the root ends are about 1 inch apart. Chicken poop is good b/c of the high phospherous (just not directly on the root) a normal slow release fertilizer will work mulch it well. It takes the roots a couple of years to mature. The first year you can only harvest for about 1 week, each successive year you can harvest longer by the 3rd year you can harvest about 8 wks.

Thanks to Buster, I now have a chicken dog. Well that aint possible, cause a chicken cant be a dog..... Oh well you guys know what I mean. Thanks to Buster I now have a huge dog named Bear (Buster since I dont have a big bear, just shortened his name to Bear) unless you consider the wife sometimes that can be a bear, but I wouldnt go there for love nore money.

Anyway Buster many many thanks. Bear settled right in and looks like he is going to be happy here.

Very pretty dog, and lucky chickens having their own body gaurd.

Gary made an automatic door and installed it on one of the coops yesterday. Which means the chickens have to use a new door, I can tell you they like change about as much as I do!

Evening!

All my babies are now in brooders in the barn. When I turn on the lights in the morning, the air explodes with baby talk. Most of the brooders still have a light for warmth, but many are just using a 65 watt bulb with a cover. They snuggle under it at night, but during the daytime it's ignored. I'm looking forward to moving the oldest group to a tractor soon.

Kass - Thanks for posting the info about asparagus. My Grandmother always had asparagus in her garden, but I've never started any. I have a lot of little plants anxious to go outside. I'm wary, though, so I'm going to keep them in for a little longer. I need to turn the trays around so that the little stems will bend in the other direction.
