***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Well, put my Wheaten Marans hatching eggs in the incubator this morning along with 3 Blue Orpington eggs and 1 buff/blue orpington mix (not sure what that babywill look like)

I sure wish this weather would make up its mind!

I have a blue orpington hen that has a topknot, is that a bad thing?

morning guys! looks like the guineas have worked things out - they didn't read the book about being in the coop and considering it home- they all slept in the tree last nite... so will convert their coop into a broody house, silly things-

coral, here is the girl i was talking to you about, muffy's daughter- she has a topknot

Okay, so I have never had this happen before so I am gonna ask someone who might have had it happen. It appears that the power went out last night. i lost all my babies that had just been moved to the brooders, pullets and cockerels, over 200. My question is, the temperature reading in each of the incubators was around 62. how long can they withstand that low of a temperature before they die in the shell?

None of the hatching peeps are on right now. I do have a question, you hatch in the brooder? Any idea how long they were at that low temp?

I had a hen get off the nest with a zipped egg that was really cold, I was able to heat it up with a hair dryer & get it out of the egg......it did well until the next day, when we lost it.

I had just moved them from the hatcher to the brooder. Actually I only moved the pullets to the brooder and left the cockrels in the hatcher. Not that it made a difference they ALL died. As far as the temps in the incubators my last check was around 10pm last night and all was well. So IF the power went out right after that the GQF's lose temperature faster than the Humidaire. They probably were in the 60's for 4 hours, maybe five. The humidaire will usually hold temp a while so maybe 2 hours on that one, those eggs just went in yesterday. The GQF's were all within a week or two of hatching. everything is back up and running and at the correct temp but who knows..... I will candle tomorrow.

BTW you got my message for the bottled water right? I will probably bring some Pop too.

I'm sorry! yes I got the message & put you on my list, I had planned to post the list but waiting on clairification on the pies. LOL.

Sorry you lost so many babies! I was reading it that you put eggs in the brooder! Yeah good thing it's Friday.

I personally have only lost power 1 time & it was for a few hours. I wrapped up the incubator to help it stay warmer. From my understanding eggs that you just set in the incubator are much more fragile to temp changes than eggs that are almost fully formed.

So sorry you lost all those babies!!!

My message didn't show up just now! I was trying to post about hatching in power outages. I will give it a moment & see if it appears.

Today I happened to be at atwoods when 200 new day olds arrived from ideal. Must has been ment to be. Got a blue polish & black & blue NN. Everyone else stay away from atwoods on the morning of chick deliveries. There is no way to walk out without chicks!
