***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Special thanks to Ksane for the chicks!!! I only planned on a couple and told my kids we couldn't take them all but then we seen them and that was that. Haha. Now I have 7 in the coop 4 downstairs and 10 in my bedroom. I think its time to get busy on the big coop.
According to someone on chicken math none of mine lay eggs so I guess I don't have chickens yet.

Oops, you're still outa' chickens??
Haha! Your daughters are adorable!!! I was sad letting the Bantam Faverolles go but only til I saw the look on your daughter's face holding him :) He'll get lots of attention with them.
I'm glad you took some, it takes some of the load off me and maybe your girls will feel just a little bit better about those eggs not hatching.

i'd be willing to take him on if you decide to put him down, as everyone knows here, i will do my darndest to get him fixed... maybe have mitzi bring him down with her crossbeak...

When birds twitch their heads like that more often than not it means they have lice or mites. Which is pretty much a gimme at auctions anyway. The bird you were describing might have been a Red Pyle OEGB possibly. And I'm 99% sure he was a boy. And no way he'd get along with baby chicks so if he was the one you were talking about it's good you resisted.
The baby Silkie's legs are really twisted. One of my mixes (10 generations inbred from the nieghbors) has legs wobbly and twisted from the knee joint, his toes are twisted, too. It wasn't anything I could've straightened out, it looks double jointed or something. He's only 5 1/2 wks but he's to the point he can't really walk very well, we might be faced with putting him down. It's not going to hurt to give it a shot with some sort of splints for the Silkie baby.
I would love the faverolle. We splint the legs with vet wrap and a band-aid. If it doesn't help I will have my dad put him down. He said that's what they always did growing up so he's not sure about splinting. But we are giving it a try. I'll cry like a baby I'm sure. Well. I'll pm you about the chicks. I'm on my way to my moms.

Robin, you hatched 5 out of the 5 Fav eggs under the broody?? No way! I need to use broodys.

yep 3 are out and two are working on it- the only problem with a broody- i think she is related to nana's broody- this girl can bite hard! as for your little guy, add him to the rehab list

Now that you mention it, he really does look like a screech owl.

Thank goodness he doesn't screech! Besides peeping, he trills when he's content. He came as a freebie from Murray McMurray when the girls were ordered. Here's his feet. The middle toe on each foot only has a tuft at the base of the toe right now, but there are some fine hair fuzzies on each one, so maybe there will be a few feathers. How many toes do cochins have?

I never knew there was so much to know about chickens. And who knew there were so many breeds. I sure didn't! Some of them are just beautiful. Y'all just amaze me with all the breeding and hatching and everything. I'd be 'chicken' to even try.

1975 for me, I don't feel as old now. I better

Happy Easter to all, and a big

Oh he is a sweetie!!! She named him Sparta and he took to the other chickens and visa versa just fine. He was crawling all over us when we hung out in the coop with them. And the other dark chick got named Coco. lol She said she doesn't care what sex it is. Thanks again. I promise they have a great home! Now to go put up my chicken wire since you said the oldest will fly!

Brandy (BBAcres) has the crossbeak now, he was one of the ones I took to her. I told her she didn't have to take him and Brandy-if you decide against it I'll get him to Robin. He/She does eat real good though and the penciling on the feathers made me think it was female but I don't know if you can tell sex at 2 1/2 wks, probably not. Her daughter was hugging it and kissing it lol So he'll get lots of good attention.
With the funny-legged one I've got I started giving him good slugs of Poultry Drench the past few days hoping that maybe it's something simple that vitamins could cure. I almost want to say they seem to be improving. He still walks funny but honestly-he's not down on his hocks anymore like he was 5 days ago so it gives me hope. He's a mix of a couple really special chickens of my daughters so I think we'll end up at the vet to see what can be done before I make any decisions about putting him down. That'd be a last resort if even the vet can't fix him.

Faverolles are the ultimate gentle passive chicken :) I have no doubt he'd do just fine with any chickens. I'm so glad your daughter got him, I could tell how much she liked him lol
Little girls needs chicks on Easter!

I finally got caught up. I fell behind getting birds ready for the auction in Inola. Arriving there at eight o'clock put me in a line of trucks filled with chicken cages, and the steady creep and stop probably burned more gas than the entire trip up there. Note to self: Leave earlier to avoid the long line of late-arriving chicken sellers. Second note to self: Leaving earlier puts a person in a long line of early-arriving chicken sellers.

It worked out, though, since I got a chance to visit with Joe's family, Lisa, Staci, and Kim. There were a few new acquaintances made, and lots of folks were eager to talk chicken.

Even though my birds were in the second-to-the-last row, I still did well in sales. I also managed to make a few purchases from the huge lot where multiple auctions are run simultaneously throughout the day. It rained on and off, so buyers disappeared and reappeared if they'd come unprepared for wet weather. I think the best deals were made by buyers when the thunder, lighting, and rain were in full chorus.

I bought a Craftsman toolbox bench for the barn. Now I have a place to keep my tools and no longer need to walk to the shop. I also bought an old boat trailer, which will become the mobile base for my pastured egg house. The hens will get lots of grass and bugs in their diet, and I can know that they are fertilizing as they go. My most significant purchase was actually a shared deal. I'd waited all day, in the rain, and it was quickly getting dark, so I was shocked and frantic when I saw that a friend, Kim, wanted to stacking brooder, and I wanted the stacking brooder, so we agreed that only she would bid and we'd split the cost and the units. I cam home with the four-legged base, a grow out compartment, and a brooder compartment. She went home with a grow out compartment and two brooders, which included the top section that has the metal cover. Her husband is good at building things, so she assured me he could construct an appropriate base. I'd paid $65 for a single brooder unit at another auction, so paying less than $25 apiece for these components makes me a happy hatcher.

Happy Easter! I need to go feed and water before it gets all the way dark.
