***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I just spent 30 min closing everything up-- 60 mph winds & hail is a few miles away. The guineas are still standing outside their coop screaming at it, but I did my best. Everyone else is up. I wasn't going to get beat by hail just because they want to play outside.
Tonight & tomorrow are showing the same pattern as when the huge tornados took out Alabama last yr. heard of storm chasers even coming from as far as Wisconsin just to experience an Oklahoma spring time weekend.

Take care jcat! I'm about to follow suit and go put everyone up

Last weather report I heard was they were expecting western OK to get nailed, but they didn't think much would make it to the east side of the state, have they changed their minds?

I've been working in the garden and playing w/ the chicks. Something I have noticed is the barred ones are the smallest (they are the youngest) anyway they are also the first to do everything, first to try new food, first to go to a new area, first to fly up on top of the box etc... and the ones w/ the black combs they are by far the most skiddish, afraid of their own shadow.

Hey what do you know me too, planted in more squash, tomatoes, peppers, melons, corn, and cantalope. I think I will plant another acre or two in melon, and cantalope and about 1/2 acre in sweet corn. Then start the Okra that will be at least 1/2 acre as well. Hope to have plenty for the coming year.
Looking forward to pickled Okra, Fried Okra, enough Sweet corn all ready for the year, Tomatoe preserves which I am really looking forward to. and who knows what else other than the fresh peas and green beans.

Jarvis do you irrigate your corn? I think our soils is similar, high water table underneath -- sandy loam. I grow melons without irrigation, but I nervous on corn!
Seen a shucker -- think wizbang plucker for corn. Thi I I want to order one of those.

So far the hail missed us, but I know this is just the beginning!
Everyone secure anything you still want to have come Sunday. Gather all the lawn chairs & such. Keep wondering if I forgot anything. I will make another round when we get a clear patch.

I do .. and a few other garden groups!

Did your original irises come from Paul Black and/or Perry Dyer? I've been a member of the Tulsa Area Iris Society for over 30 years, and have spent a lot of time in OKCity gardens, and we worked with OKC on a couple of national conventions. I'm also a charter member of the Oklahoma Hosta Society in OKC, though I no longer drive over there. I'll bet we have a lot of friends in common if we don't know each other!

I bet we do! No most of my iris came from friends over at another forum - bought sold and traded over there - a lot are rare, old, or just not your everyday Iris I am a part of the Norman group.. how be it with everything else I dont make it over there too often!

Well I have most of those things planted (no corn) but my garden is considerably smaller a total of about 50' x 100' Do you plant that much to sell? very large family? feed your livestock?

I've been stock piling canning jars, this will be my first year to can (unless you count helping my Gma when I was very young by the time I was a teen she had given up on canning and much gardening)

I planted the red okra, hoping the chickens will like it better red then green, and it is shading other parts of the garden.

My beans are going to town. I do need to get more greens planted though.

The babies got introduced to fermented oats. At first they weren't convinced it was food, there was a lot of beak scratching on the ground, but when they were finally convinced they had a field day w/ them. I only gave them a little want to gradually expose them to fermented grain so they don't get diarrhea. I'll take them out some dubia's, but I have to take it out in a different container unless I want to feed everyone today b/c the EE know the dubia bucket.
