***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Here's my Dominiques out enjoying the early morning sunshine. It's not a great picture of them, but it's the only one I could get that wasn't "R" rated. That darned rooster! Early mornings are not family-friendly photo time. :D
I LOVE, LOVE LOVE your creative coop! That is Folk Art. - nice birds too.

Love the chicken house. I use the signs also. I got about 40 of the 4x8 foot ones that are made out of plastic like cardboard. Very weather proof, and cheap ;)

I put the colored side on the inside and it makes very nice looking pens.

Quote: Did I ever tell you about the super overweight pot-bellied pig someone dumped off on me with some sob story?? I had to worm the dang thing and clip its teeth and it was NOT tame like the people claimed. I finally got a hold of it but the only way to hang on was lay on its back and ride it like a little bucking bronco. (I was only 100 lbs back then-haha!) I rode that pig all over the yard while my son (3 yrs old at the time) stood at the gate yelling, "Go Mama Go!!!"

My pig rodeo days are over!
LOL

Oh my goodness, that sounded hilarious! Too bad you don't have video!!!
Oh! I forgot my best news of all today :)) My little Faverolles pullet's crop was completely flat this morning when I let them out. So she's digesting everything! She still gets meds for another 8 days. I hope I don't have to deal with it again.
Yeah!! I am so happy for you and her! Wonderful news!

Morning all. More guineas are hatching today, Cathie will you be @ Blanchard? Hopefully I will have your keets, lots of movement going on in their hatching tray.
Put an extra light out last night in the grow out pen, I was scared the birds would get too cold. I also turned our heat on inside, just to make sure the keets didn't get a chill. Now time to flip the thermostat back over to cool.
Need to come up with something for dinner, guess I should inventory the fridge. Never in my life made instant rice before last night, but my sister uses it for EVERYTHING. Took chopped up left over chicken - 2 cups chicken broth 1- cup salsa brought to a boil -- added 2 cups instant rice, turned it off & topped w cheese. Came out very yummy for being so simple 10 minutes spent cooking dinner. Next time I will throw veggies in with it.
That sounds yummy! I will have to try it tonight, thanks for the idea!
still loopy from the dentist- but was thinking0 maybe some folks could get together and buy oxine for the jue swam? and have it available??
Robin, if you are suggesting getting a good size order of oxine together for the June swap then I am in! Sorry I could not resist!! That one was just too easy. I have been there, hope you feel better soon..

I LOVE the coop with the signs!! Now I will have to see about getting some! You can just take them down for free after the election? I would never have known that. I will have to call around.
Hope everyone is enjoying the wonderful weather! The kids are riding their bikes up and down the road right now. I love the quiet in the house!

Nana, I'm sorry about your hen. What a nice memorial for your mom though :)

It *is confusing! And some of those Ameraucana people have their nose up in the air a bit too high lol What's silly (I've said this before) is you can take 2 purebred, even show quality, Ameraucanas of differing colors and breed them together and if the chicks come out a non-standard color they're considered EE's. Even though they're still purebred. It's ridiculous. Who knows why they throw off colors every once in awhile? Maybe somewhere in one of Jack's birds there was an EE way back or something. And every so often the strange color shows up. Here's the one I got from Jack that I'd never part with-she's beautiful. But she's not an accepted Ameraucana color so she'd be considered an EE. But I couldn't care less-she's the coolest color! And Jack's birds are super healthy and big. The overpriced Lavender Ameraucanas I got are smaller and feathering out real slow.

Actually it's fairly simple if you think in terms of hybrids/crosses. It's exactly the same and the same rules apply. BSLs aren't sold as either of their parents breeds. CX are CX or hybrids. You don't go to shows or sales and find CX entered as standard Cornish. If I take a pair of BSLs and breed them, the offspring are not BSLs and no one expects them to be. If I purchase BRs, BSLs don't show up in the mail. If I purchase CX and get Cornish, I won't be happy. Well, I might, but you know what I mean.

EEs are a hybrid whose sole intention is to introduce the blue egg gene into brown and white egg layers to achieve various shades of blue and green egg layers. That's why I say EEs who lay pink(brown
roll.png
) eggs are not EEs. Same as any other hybrid. CX are bred for size & growth speed. EE are bred for blue/green eggs.

I don't consider non-standard AMs to be EEs and honestly I don't think any AM people really do either. It's more about trying to simplify rather than have lengthy explanations because it truly comes up that often. I had a judge a couple years ago tell me he cringes every time he sees them in the show list because they are always EEers, then he has to DQ, then he has to explain, usually to an upset kid and irate parent. It's much easier to say anything non standard is an EE vs going into AM/EE discussions all the time. EEers are all over the place and usually sold as EEers/AMs/Araucanas as if they are interchangeable. That is the big problem. They're not. Araucanas? Really? Even I can spot glaring differences there. Maybe because OK has a bigger , more knowledgeable poultry crowd, but hit a few shows elsewhere and see how many EEers get entered as Araucanas.

Far greater importance to me is the underlying genetics. We've hatched many EEs that easily fit the standards for black AMs. No matter what the bird looks like, if it's band is anything other than blue, it's not to go into DSs breeding pens. If I run around selling breeding pairs of these EE look a likes to people, they're going to have all kinds of wonky offspring hatching out and probably wouldn't be too happy with me. Kind of like the EEers laying pink(brown
roll.png
) eggs.

I love my AM/Cuckoo Marans mixes. I could sell them as EEs, BSLs or Olive Eggers,no problem. It wouldn't be right for me to sell them to people as Cuckoo Marans or Ameraucanas because they are neither. If I paired them off and hatched their offspring, well they wouldn't be BSLs for sure. I'd have to raise each pullet to lay before I could say which were EEs, Olive Eggers or dark egg layers. All roos, yard birds or farm mixes because who knows what egg color gene combo each would have.

I'm confused when you had 2 pigs you wanted to sell them but now that you have 12 you don't???? Seems backwards to me.

Sounds like chicken math.

Is Michael D, michaeldaugherty? I am still trying to find some Jersey Giants. That is all my 13 yr old wants for his birthday. Chickens have really brought him out of his autism shell (pardon the pun). OkCarla hasn't listed any ads in craigslist that I know of, but I have been looking.
I am running out of time to find some! Please pass my name on to someone you think might be able to help. Message me!
Thanks oodles and gobs!

I know what you mean. For my DS, people don't matter so much to him, but his chickens he's very much aware of.

Was on another thread reading about an egg swap. Not here in Oklahoma, but maybe something that could be incorporated into poops next yr.
You show up with your eggs, place them on the appropriate table (LF, bantam; pure, mix, other & such). Then for each dz eggs you bring you get an egg carton to fill up of others eggs. So if you only want to take 4 of X eggs then you put them in your carton & still have 8 more eggs of other varieties you can gather. Does that make sense? Maybe it is something we could try @ poops next yr.
FYI-- I am sharing this now since I will more than likely forget by the time next spring comes.

That sounds like a great idea to me! I would enjoy something like that. Can you only swap the same type of eggs you brought? Like mix for mix, pure for pure, etc.? Hmmm.... this sounds like fun to me!

This is too neat an idea to pass up. We can do this at NEOCS on June 16th. I'll put a note on the planning thread. I have a table we can use for this egg swap. I need a little more info, such as who gets to pick their eggs first? How do we mark the eggs? Would it be best to have it like a donut counter where the person picking out eggs points and says, "I'd like four of the blue ones, please," and then the person behind the counter puts the four blue eggs in the carton? Send me a PM. I want to know more.
