***OKIES in the BYC III ***

NannaKat & tgperg - love the photos!

It's raining buckets here. I was supposed to take the goat kids to a friend's house for help disbudding today, but I don't know If I want to travel with goats in a downpour (that sounds odd. Does one drive a downpour, pilot a downpour, or pull a downpour behind a truck?). They don't do well in wet weather. I may have to reschedule the disbudding for next week.

I dropped off my ratched-strapped hive body with frames, bottom board, inner cover, and telescoping cover at the apiary in Tulsa yesterday. I'll be picking up my nuc of

some time next week. For folks looking for a local bee supply, Greg and his wife at Ozark Bee Supply in Tulsa are great. Nucs, separate queens, etc. are available next week. They have a price list online. They sell hive bodies and all the safety equipment one could think of. They can also be reached through the NEOBA (North Eastern Oklahoma Bee Association) website.

I need to go check for leaky roofs and tarps. Hope to see some folks online later. Stay dry!

Congrats to those who got enough rain. We have only received less than 1/4 inch rain...really would have liked to get more. Next chance for rain is 10 days out. So looks like I'll be watering the garden good this week. And Roger and his brother will be cutting hay.

Going into town for bulk feed for the cows and scratch for the girls with hubby....probably stop for lunch somewhere...nice day for it.

Anyone else have layers that are dropping off on eggs? We have dropped by 9 - 12 a day.
I guess the heat has affected the girls some...bet they go thru a bit of a molt soon too. Will adjust their feed a little to boost the protein.
Ordered 260 # of long shred cabbage and will pick it up Monday....kraut making time.

I'm down to 5 quart jars in the pantry. We make enough to keep the family in kraut for two years. This year the weather is perfect for setting up the crocks in the carport to ferment.

Here's my Dominiques out enjoying the early morning sunshine. It's not a great picture of them, but it's the only one I could get that wasn't "R" rated. That darned rooster! Early mornings are not family-friendly photo time. :D
I love this coop mine are mostly built from materials other people have thrown away or are going to throw away

I spy on OKC Craigslist a 5 tier metal brooder $290. We already have 4 or I would be calling on it. Hopefully one of you are able to give the brooder a nice home & fill it up fast!

Where do you get pre-shredded cabbage?

It is great that Greg Hannaford puts your nuc directly into your hive equipment. One of the most daunting things for a new beekeeper is to transfer those 5 frames over into a full 10 frame hive, thereby handling their bees for probably the first time. I have heard that the genetics on his hives are wonderful and that his bees are gentle. Congratulations on this new adventure.

everyone, please add my father in law, Frank, to your prayers and thoughts- they found a small tumor in his colon yesterday, he will be getting a cat scan and then they can decide what to do...

Lost my LF Lemon Blue roo Thursday night so now I am on a mission to find another one. Were do I start looking?
OKRaceFan, No! I'm so sorry :( :(
I looked into attempting to breed Lemon Blue. It seems you need a Brown Red to a Blue hen. I've got some hens but couldn't find a BR standard sized Cochin anywhere I looked. I got my Gold Laced & SIlver Laced from the couple on Ebay in AZ. She was going to send me some Lemon Blues for just the cost of shipping because she was late shipping the Laced eggs but I didn't hear from her again. She's a nice lady, just a bit scattered and I don't think she can keep up well with the demand. Her version of Lemon Blue is really pretty, it's different. She used Buffs and Blues. Of course there's no standard for it anyway so you can do whatever version you want. There's an old auction of hers at http://www.ebay.com/itm/300687164599?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_694wt_931 if you want to see a picture. They also are/used to be on BYC.
I tell ya-if I could find a brown red Cochin boy or some Brown/Red eggs I believe I'd give it a shot.
