***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Well its a sad Memorial day for us for sure. Some of you have met our little "retirement child" Izzy. She jumped out a ditch right in front of a motorcycle this afternoon. They were very nice and stopped and told us and apologized but there was no way they could avoid her. She was really like our child and will be missed greatly. At least it was fast and she didn't suffer.
I remember her on you lap at the sale at Stilwell. She was such a sweetie. I'm so sorry she's gone.

Wayne, I'm sorry to hear of your loss,
On a brighter note how is the moving back to Ok. going?

Carl, Nathanael is drooling over those pictures, lol. His little columbian OE are making a little nest spot in their coop he checks numerous times a day for eggs. I am secretly praying they don't start laying until after July 4th. He will want to set those eggs and I just can't do it until after July 4th lol.

Nana, anytime you have some CW pullets to part with we would love a few more. I love this trio, they are so laid back, hubby hopes to build their big pen once we get done with fireworks. I just can't believe how sweet these three are, alot like my buff orphingtons and my black australorps.

Well I thought our EE's were laying already and just laying pink eggs instead of green, nope today went to gather eggs and Nathanael brought me a green egg! So finally I think all my girls in the laying hen coop is laying now, lol. We got almost 2 dozen eggs today, I am gonna have to figure out how to use up these eggs, I think I have 10 dozen in the fridge now.
Custard, lots o'custard, deviled eggs and chicken food. lol

They are far too young to lay, wait till at least august or september..
You know I still have extra pullets when he ready... He will do very well showing them this show season if he chooses to.

Those Columbians were the last of our stock, I mad sure Nana got the better birds, that is just thier nature very docile, laid back, friendly and huge.. They will not be done growing till about 16-18 months of age the sheer size when they are done will astound you.

Thanks we will try to plan a time to come get him a few extra pullets this week, but I will have to work around mom's surgery on Thursday.

It is a good thing he is building them a better and bigger pen then, lol. They are already big IMO and they are in a a-frame tractor. He plans on building them their own 15 x 8 pen, we found some Silver Laced ones at auction, only 6 little chicks but they get dibs on the pen next to the CW's. Hubby is loving them. All the other birds he calls mine but the CW's are his lol.

Okla, sorry about your little guy. K

Kass, I may have to boil some up for the chicks. The kids made egg salad for lunch today. We may have omlets for dinner.

I have two garden spots for the chickens, it is full of planted boss and kale, greens, radish ect. for them to eat when it gets hot and has several things planted in trellis for us to eat but that should provide some shade for them, anyway when I planted it out I put all the kale seeds in there for the chickens. Knowing all the articles about how good they are for people to eat and how tastey they say the kale is I was second guessing myself. Anyway I waded through the thick plants to make sure the people food was well watered and look for squash bugs ect.... I sampled each type of kale I found in there and I have to say I am glad I put it in there, that might be healthy, but it is pretty fowl tasting stuff!!!!!

Kass I juice kale with apples, carrots, celery, cucumbers & ginger. Yummy. DH & oldest DD love kale chips

MJ think I had 3 of the eggs we got from you @ poops hatch & one the Traci brought me a wk later.

Doddle sorry about your loss!

Mitzi Taron thinks she makes great money with her hobby. Since we bought the initial incubators, pens & birds plus pay for the gas to get to the auction she has done great-- but the reality is when she takes birds to sell most times it doesn't cover the gas & the food we eat at the sale. She loves it though & I figure it is teaching her hard work & responsibility plus social skills. She is so shy at talking to other adults for the most part, but they always approach her about guineas or hatching & she is forced to talk to them. She sets aside 1/2 the money she makes & it goes in an envelope for feed. Days when she doesnt want to do chores she pays her sister $15 a day to tend to the birds. Sad thing is if I relied on the funds to purchase all the feed the birds would be hungry by September. Told DH the other day if we sell off all her birds & equipment when she graduates we may cover 1 semester in college. The girl sure loves her birds!
Oh Traci one of the buff eggs you brought to the auction hatched today, so far that makes 3 buff Cochins, Alexis has claimed them. She started wanting birds of her own after She figured out her little sister is getting rich selling birds. Not sure we can manage 2 chicken crazed kids!
Well done with my lunch break, going to clean the barn, then catch some guineas to take down to the neighbor.

Cool! I'm glad she got a buff cochin then! Those are out of the trio I got from MJ.
