***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Well, I got rid of a bunch of birds, turned around and built another A-frame today so I could keep more birds... (Does that make sense?) Now for two more in the next week or so and I should be ready for next years breeding season.

The Boy's will be building and selling the 12x6 A-frames we use made of cedar this summer so if you are interested in one or a few just send me a PM and I will have Brandon call you back.
I do have 2 300 Gallon plastic totes with the metal cage and a few more to pick up tomorrow if anyone is interested in them as well, I have a friend who uses them for pens it's a cool set-up too.

Carl, I promise to get the guineas this evening. Their cheerful noisy chirping is a source of great joy to DH as well.

Thanks, looks like mom will go home tomorrow. Not sure how that will work since she is still having vision problems. I have talked to hubby and we have decided to scale back our breeding stock for next year anticipating mom needing more care. She is 72 and has been pretty active until now but her diabetis is getting worse as well. Something she hasn't been keeping in check. So if anyone needs some young birds or chicks holler chances are we have it to sell for a good deal, lol.

I think it would be nice for our BYC'er that lost their home if we can plan a good ol' chicken coop build once they are ready to replace some of their flock. Not sure on what breeds they had overall but I know all of us have coop building skills of some sort.

Well off to go finish cleaning coops the rain sure did a number on them this week. I need to go to the feed store for more pine shavings I am resorting to our emergency stash of shreaded paper to put down in the muddy runs. I think I will go get some tarps to cover the runs with. We have 2 pens with tarp covered runs and they are dry as can be so it will save me $ overall if I go get some tarps for the other runs.

Carl I haven't forgotten about the 2 pullets for Nathanael just haven't had 2 mins to figure out a plan to go get them. Maybe this week will be quieter and dh or I can make time.

Not a problem, I'm just thinning the feed bill and getting myself better set for teh show season. Need the room for the ones I need in good condition for that more than breeding at this point I have plenty set asside for next years breeders and show cockrells are coming along well just need nothing but pullets from the last two months and this month then I'm done for the year (maybe)

Robin, silkies have a hole in their skull quite like a human baby's fontanel. It has a strip of bone over the center. If a silkie has a high vaulted skull, the brain actually protrudes through that hole. You can feel the vaulted skull under all that fluff. The high vaulted skull also results in a lot more fluff, as it grows over all the vault. The only drawback to the vaulted skull is that they can be injured more easily, and a hard blow to the right spot can temporarily disable or even kill them.

Often a silkie that is said to be "star gazing" has had a brain injury because of a blow to that spot. If it isn't too severe and is caught in time, giving it vitamin E a couple of times a day for several days and making sure it eats--may involve force-feeding--can often bring it out of that condition.

4 Guineas out of 9 born so far but we've had to peel them each out of their shell. We brought them all inside after the broodys failed meserably at hatching out the Orloff/Marans chick. Broody hens don't always do it better it seems, another myth in the chicken world. And why are people so gung-ho and obsessed with temp and humidity with an incubator and it's far from perfectly set under those messy hens?

Sherri/BirdWalkFarm--the coral blue guinea eggs you gave me at POOPS hatched today. Out of the 12, 1 was clear and 1 pipped halfway and quit. I'm sure the humidity was too high, so I then chipped the rest of the pipped babes out. All of the coral blues and most of the ones I added from my own flock are doing well. Three of mine haven't even pipped (I had no idea how old the eggs were), but this is only day 26, so I'll leave them in a couple more days. However, I feel fairly sure the high humidity has killed them.

Thank you again for bringing these eggs to me!

A very nice young couple and their two children came today and bought two pairs of adult guineas from me for their hobby farm. I've given them information and encouraged them to look in on this forum, and I hope we see them here!

amazing how that works isnt it, you get rid of a bunch of birds and build pens so you will have them.

i get a buch of birds, and have to work all day on pens so i have a place to put them!

now if i live thru this i will be doing good. ate 5 popsicles, took a shower, sitting in front of the ac, and i'm still freaking hot!

it surprised me to hatch one, these were shipped eggs i am assuming the same pen- only one is vaulted...




the chick that has the leg problem is silkie/cochin
i do have him on vitamins and seems to be helping....

No, I don't I actually like you.. otherwise those birds would have had a different fate..
I needed the pen anyway for next year as I still need one more too. But will have fewer matings of the birds this year and don't need the cockrells other than showing some of them since I plan to go back to the older cock birds again.
I think I have you set with good seed stock and some for the kids out that way too.

I skipped the popcycles and had 1 qt of icecream, but still spent the day outside in the heat and humudity. The shower was cool and refreshing.
