***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I just wanted to make myself clear on something I said earlier about the auction. I thought Joe and Old Cowboy did a wonderful job as hosts. They did everything they were supposed to do, especially on such short notice. I was going to buy some chickens twice and on one bid that won, the guy changed his mind and said he wouldn't go that low. It was $3.00 less than his original asking price. I just felt like if he didn't want to sell them at that price, he should have made that clear beforehand because I do understand what a reserve price is but thought since they were taking lower bids that the seller was willing to part with them for a bit less since no one else was bidding. This in NO WAY had anything to with the emcee and auctioneer. They were trying to be as helpful as they could so thank you Joe and Old Cowboy for a job well done. I am still learning about the auction process so I am in no way an expert on this either.

I thought the whole event was wonderful. I really enjoyed myself other than the heat. I agree that the middle of the barn was much warmer than other parts. I personally did not come prepared. I should have brought more food, drinks and a big ole fan! Live and Learn though. I will be better prepared for the next meet.

Next time I really need to focus on talking to a few more people but for those that I did get to talk to, it was a pleasure to meet you all. My grandson is gonna love the OEGB's I bought. When I got home, my kids said "Don't tell me, you got more chickens!"

As a result, I have been working hard all day to build some smaller coops for the Bantams. I am building a 4 X 8 run with a 2 X 4' coop area for the trio. I'm gonna build three of them. Pray for me, I'm gonna need it! I am sooooo exhausted from working on it all day but wouldn't change a thing. I love my chickens! Already thinking about more chickens and coops I am still wanting! Back to work tomorrow.

By the way, I commend all of you that have built smaller A-frame coops. Tried it and absolutely COULD NOT figure out how to get my angles right with the height I needed. I could get the angles right on the bottom base but couldn't figure out how to get them together at the right height. Decided to go with a rectangular box type coop. It's not straight either but I'm no carpenter. I am getting better at all of the time and I did my best. Will take some pics and post them in a day or two.

Kass. So sorry for the loss of your chicken. I tend to get attached to almost all of my chickens and I know it is very sad to lose your favorites. Thanks for sharing some info about the feeder bugs. I found it very interesting. I don't know that I could raise roaches though but what about earthworms. Are they very nutritious for the birds? I would think so, but I am not knowledgeable in this area. Also, you sure are brave caponizing chickens. I am NOT nurse or doctor material.

Wish I could do something like that but I just don't have it in me. Way too squeamish!

It was great meeting you and I hope to see you again at the next event.

By the way, I just want to say that you all had some very beautiful chickens. I was on a tight budget so I wasn't able to get very much this time. I spent more money on a cage than I did chickens. Another unprepared moment. I was going to build me some little cages but everyone here is sold out of cage clamps and j clamps. I tried 3 different places! Atwoods, TSC and Lowes.

It was nice meeting you too.

The chicken that I had to euthanize today was going to be processed for meat anyway, but this was my first time, so it was a little emotional for me.

Earthworms are a good choice, you should chose red wigglers, they are much better at eating regular kitchen waste. But be aware that chickens can get gapeworms from earthworms. I do not know how a worm gets infected w/ the parasite that becomes gapeworms in chickens. The gapeworm attatches itself to the trachea of the chicken, and a lot of wormers don't treat gapeworm. But I am not that knowledgeable about wormers so there may be some that do treat it. Black soldier fly larva are also a good choice, but they can only be grown in season which here is about april - oct/nov but you could harvest and freeze for the winter.

Yes, I'm not very squeemish, wouldn't do to be in my work! lol lol lol

Ok so maybe I could do the flies. I don't want to cause problems for my chickens. I didn't mind those meal worms you had. I might have to look into that too. I just hate roaches. I grew up in Louisiana and we had big black roaches with wings that would fly or glide or whatever. I hate those things. My family still lives there so I have to fight them off when visiting. LOL

Injoyd reading all you peep's story's sure misd not being at the swap....Thanks for posting the pic's for the one's of us to see that couldnt make it.

These are our two new girls we got Saturday at the show. We are so pleased. The silkie is just crazy sweet, my girls are so in love with her. Stella, the hamburg is still in the getting to know us phase but is adjusting nicely.

Joe and Cowboy you both did a great job auctioning. I could hear everything and enjoyed watching the whole thing.

Sort of being an outsider looking in, and not knowing what could have, or should have gone on, I can say it seemed to me like it all went smoothly. I got to see so many new chickens and my daughters really enjoyed the meet as well.

If any of you are on facebook and want to add me you can, I do much better when I can put a face to a name.
