Hope everyone has a splendid 4th of July!
We drove back to Choctaw this morning and picked up the three remaining heifers to calve and brought them home. Besides losing the one that was pulled, another heifer successfully had her calf last night. These 7 girls were not supposed to calve until September...looks like the 8 month old bull that was running with them until we took him out was very capable to do the deed! Not what we intended! The little momma that lost the calf was doing great this morning. she stayed with the dead calf all night but moved on with the herd this morning. You have to give animals a chance to accept death naturally.
Edit to add: Checked my notes. The girls went to the right bull
IN September rather than being
DUE in September....whew! Keeping notes only helps if you READ them.
Going to do some shifting this morning of the flock. Need to move 32 growing March born chicks off the floor to the outside. And want to move the broodie CW's inside. I have CW eggs in the incubator that will hatch about the time the broodies do so I want them to take on the hatchlings. So I'm going to switch their locations. These chickies need more space! I really need another large covered pen....but this will do for now.
You were in Choctaw today and I went through Meeker. Thought of you as I was traveling down the highway!
