***OKIES in the BYC III ***

i am pretty sure its a vitamin issue, so am supplimenting the feed- and she seems more alert- but i read where lack of some vitamins can cause them to lose leg control- ricketts... and since i wasn't feeding them chick feed, but the regular feed, am leaning that direction. Not worth saving pennies when these little guys are needing different feed....

i have one little silkie/cochin that his feathers were tweaked, growing in sideways, and now his toes are curling under...

Robin mix up some of the booster recipe and feed them some of that.. Also if you can get your hands on some Alfalfa pellets or Rooster
booster give them that as well. Another good suppliment is the Manna Pro and it does come in small like 2lb bags. Red Cell is a horse suppliment but if you use that give them no more then one drop of that daily as it's powerful stuff. And the old standby is the Poly-Vi-Sol infants vitamins, two drops daily of that.

They can be overdosed on vits. as well as any other thing so don't overdo it, the progress will be slow but it will happen. The problems didn't devolop overnight and they won't go away overnight either.

Don't know what ya'll are griping about we got a six inch rain here today.

Measured it myself and sure enough the drops were six inches apart!!!!

He's the only adult BO roo I have, I also have 2 beautiful Barred rock roosters, a Production Red, a Rhode Island Red and a Welsummer rooster but they are all in separate pens and all are real easy going I've never had any of these guys show any fight towards me I also have never trimmed any of their spurs and a couple of the are packing some serious knives I sometimes wonder how the production red roo can even walk LOL Sometimes when I have more than one pen out roaming there are times when the Roo's stumble across each other but they usually draw there lines and then loudly dare each other to cross them from a distance (I think more to impress the ladies LOL)
Don't you have trouble with the roos hurting the hens when the spurs are long? I always heard that the roo does a better job mounting when the spurs were about 1 -1.5 inches long on large fowl.
I also learned to watch your fingers when feeding the fermented oats, lol. I am going to have to start a bigger bucket of oats fermenting. They can go through almost 5 gallons of it in one day. Right now I am only letting them have them every 3rd day or so. I would like to offer them every night as a treat so hubby is going to put his thinking cap on and figure out how to make it easier to dish out and find me a bigger bucket set up.
I use one of those hand held strainers you can get at the grocery store. I scoop out the oats leaving the water behind and toss them into a bucket for serving the chickens. I sling it out like "slopping the hogs" and that's literally what it looks like when they dive in.

Funny Les! We got a smidgen of sprinkles while the little town of Meeker 2.5 miles west of us had standing water after a shower. If we don't get any tonight, I'll start the hoses back in the garden.

MJ so glad the melon was good & sweet. I only planted 15 of those seeds, but every melon has been good. They will be returning to my garden next yr. We have eaten so much melon in the past 2 wks we are all on a sugar high. The hen still isn't sure of her new coop, but I am sure she will come around soon.

Doodle glad to hear a good Craigslist story!

Got the very pretty LF Brown / Red Roo from Ksane Saturday. Gonna put him with Splash and Lemon Blues hens and see what happens. Hopefully I will get some LB's.

okRaceFan, I forgot to give you the card of when he had his worming and Frontline. I had his follow-up de-worming with me and I forgot to give you that, too. if you want to PM me your address I'll stick it in the mail.
Would you believe the Cochin hen who had been with him finally laid an egg today??? She's in with my big Blue Cochin boy now so either way I'll get some more Cochins :) Maybe this 1 egg she laid will be a Brown Red boy!

Anyone know of any place in or near the OKC metro (I'm in Piedmont) that will be selling/trading hens next Saturday? I'm nearly finished with my coop and run and about ready for birds. I'd like to get about 4 hens, good layers that would be good around kids (6 and 9) and old enough that they can deal with the weather we have been having.

Thanks,
SDS

I am so happy with my new coop. I've been getting eggs again! I wish I was getting more, but with the heat, and all the feathers I see flying around the coop, I think most of my hens are moulting. I have a dozen hatching eggs collected from my Dominiques over the last week, now I'm starting to rotate them out. The oldest ones will go into the fridge for eating (or into the minnow trap as bait for snakes in the old coop) and the newer ones will stay in storage just in case someone goes broody for me. (Yeah, I'm looking at you, little Miss Silkie Chickie Doo!) I bought 100 ft. of deer netting this afternoon, and a big ol' minnow trap. I'm going to go set up everything in the morning in the old coop and start cleaning out the varmints! Can't wait to move my guineas in. Got plans to put my Dominique teenager boys in a bachelor pen too, least till I can pick out the nicest ones to save for show / breeding.
