Okay a pen for fat and happy pekin ducks - does it have to have a top to it?

Pekins can't fly. They can glide but not take flight. I used to raise them and they are so friendly and sweet. I would let them out during the day when I was home and they would come up single file to my front door quacking for a treat, then they would head back down toward the pen in single file. Loved it! Critters will definitely get them at night without a top on the pen, hence the term "sitting duck". I would cover it with something.

Thanks to Navi723 we now have our first residents. Two buff orpingtons and two australorp pullets.



We took them some watermelon as a treat and it's obvious they are spoiled. The buffs came running and crowded the gate when they saw us coming. They were eating out of the kids' hands and seem to be doing great.

The buffs were pecking at the australorps a bit but nothing too major.

Already enjoying having them here.

Sometimes it is because they know they are vunerable when they can't walk. Sometimes the others will peck at them and such. They may need to be kept warm also since they are under the weather a bit. I would keep a light at one end of the pen for them like you did when they were young.

Robin if you would could you please decribe their droppings? Lets start over with the basics. Also please list what they were being fed including all treats when they became ill. Any change in routine, housing or anything else that you can think of?

Cathie, with the chicks how old are they? Mine that are 4 wks are inside the barn without a light.

Just saw the Chichasha rain totals, I am jealous! We got an inch or so yesterday but were past over for the most part today. We only saw a few sprinkles. Shouldn't complain any rain in July is an amazing thing to have! Still blows my mind I can get an inch of rain & 8 miles down the rd they only get sprinkles! Then today I got the sprinkles & they got the rain.

Mitzi I can't believe you are ordering more chicks! I do understand only wanting pullets. Found 2 Cockerals the other day that have either made their way back down to the barn or were hiding last time I sorted Roos. I love having a group of free range Roos. They don't stick together, so they cover more space to catch bugs & I get to see birds in random places in the yards & the woods.

Was exhausted this afternoon & took a nap. Didn't feel up to picking the garden tonight, but knew I couldn't avoid it. Ended up picking 50 lbs of tomatoes! It really is a good tomato yr! But the tomatoes are wearing me out! Been freezing lots of tomatoes, I either have to plug in the other freezer or start canning this weekend.
