***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hi every one I have not been on in awhile I missed y'all Okies. Bird updates are 7 new turkeys 16 new babby americonas 3 new black copper hens 1 new black copper roo 3 new rode island reds and had six new naked necks but I gave them to friends. Good news my DH converted to a bird person the other day.:D he gave in to the bird madness and now has 4 chickens 1 guinee and 7 turkeys all of his own. Yea! I know guineas make several noises but DH said they sound like they say "buck-wheat buck-wheat buck-wheat" and he was right they do sound like that lol.

Why get a bull? straws of semen for artificial insemination are usually pretty reasonable and much cheaper then keeping a bull. Plus you have your choice of probably hundreds of bulls.

Yea there are whole stores dedicated to "Why get a bull" lol lol lol lol

Sorry it's late and I couldn't resist.

Quote: I don't know. The cows aren't my fascination, they're my hubbys. He supports my chicken addiction, I will support his cattle addiction. That being said, we will undoubtably wind up with 3-4 females and 1 male. What we'll do with them is beyond me. We'll raise some for freezer camp and I'm sure we'll sell a few. Lots of our friends are interested in filling their freezers. (Yes, I realize that it'll be about 1.5 to 2 years before we're able to do that

The closest here would be Express Ranches out of Yukon but I don't know if they have short-legged cattle or not. The Dexters and other small breeds are getting so popular though that I bet there is a very good market and a lot of outlets. Embryos are how the Boar goats made it out of South Africa during a full-blown embargo, the regulations just were not in place at the time.

Embryo flushes are getting popular too but that is hard on the cows to do and is usually only used on top dollars livestock as it's expensive.

Many Dairys today are crossing their Holstiens with good Angus cattle to get a calf with black hide as they sell better and for more money.

I know that the cow we're getting is a long legged dexter. From what we've read you just can't breed a short leg to short leg. We'll have to look more into that.

Years ago my MIL had a few of the Dexters and the beef they produced was top-notch and they were butchered as grass calves so the meat had a wonderful flavor to it. To me when they are finished on grain it just takes all of the flavor out of them. Butchered as grass calves you have very lean meat too with not as much fat in it. Usually not enough fat to fry them in like the grain fed does, Teva just kept a glass of water handy when she would fry hamburgers on the stove.
