***OKIES in the BYC III ***

ETA: Oh! And I'm 95% sure the 2 Buff Orps I got from Bill are GIRLS! So glad.
So guess you need a Roo now?? :)
Quote: I have the coolest geese, the new ones I just picked up have clicked right in place here haven't seen any aggression out of the gander at all, the only one that ever shows any hint of that is Goosey and he is the protector of all the ducklings in the yard and is very protective of me also I guess he thinks I need looking after LOL I got him from Barnswallow and wouldn't take anything for him he is just too sweet,

Hi all. Is there any chance that any one of you would be going near or to Nashville Tenn. in the next couple of weeks and would be willing to transport a couple of carriers of chickens back to Oklahoma for me??? Lynn

For lunch today I went to the county assessors office and filled out a farm tax form, soon no more taxes on my feed and pen materials.

Tuesday while I was at Okracefans house, he had a chochin chick having trouble hatching. I wetted the dried membrane and peeled some of the shell off the membrane. This morning I was told it's doing fine. We think it's from his lemon blue hen and black roo, I was told it would be a brown/red or a brown/red /blue.

You are a chicken Midwife!

Dinner is delayed a bit...hubby broke the bale spike and chose to run to town for a new one at Atwoods....so I tossed out the idea of fried okra...added carrots to the roasted potatoes and turned the gravy off until he gets home.... reminding myself that the way to a man's heart is thru his stomach and that cold meat is okay.

Soooo now I have a single goose. Was at home working on this and that and get a call to run to where one of the church members was - come fast was all they said - so I run over and there in the middle of a parking lot is a goose just sitting there. I walk right up to him/her and pick him her up and she snuggled me. The store just wanted her gone so brought her home for now until I can try to find out where she is from. Very tame, and so sweet - more then my ducks that I have here already - so have her in a separate run and she is just so happy checked on her and each time she runs to the door to see and and talk to me.
I love my geese. Got them from a friend whose 5 year old grandson got tired of them being in his bedroom.....They are really neat birds. Sounds like the one you have is someone's pet...bet if you check the convenience stores there will be notices for a lost goose. They can get out and get disoriented. There is a goose thread on BYC that has loads of informtion.

Nana I will PM you the recipe I used to make mild cowboy candy, but it is still plenty warm! I think it has the same heat as salsa now. Can't wait to try it on my hot dogs. Think it will be yummy!
Thanks I got it...sounds really yummy.

Ate my first cantaloupe from my saved seed from last year and it was awesome. It is a chartenris (sp) french melon, small just 2 servings, I'll be saving seed from it again.

I just talked to OSU Avian Clinic and they do caponize chickens

It comes to about $40 per bird (about the same as a cat neuter) but for people who have chickens as pets like I do it's a godsend and I'm really happy about it. I thought of seeing if maybe Poco could do it but that'd be a 4 hr round trip (if she could even do it). Plus I hate to put her out and take up an entire day for both of us and stress the chickens out on such a long ride. The vet school is going to do it next Thursday-in 6 days. I'm going to take in 5 of them then. What a relief! This is the best news I've had in a long long time. I can keep ALL my boys-all of them! She said age doesn't matter, they do all ages. That with older birds it'll take awhile for the hormones to get out of their system.
I'm making an envelope called Nutz No Mo' and am going to start socking away money to do every boy on the place

My 16 yr old son better watch it, too.
That's great news. I'm happy to hear that the avian clinic is working to help people keep male animals that would otherwise have to go to new homes (or to stew pots). Clever name for your savings envelope
