***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Heading out to feed and water. For me, this is the best time of day to do chores.. . . before the heat gets so bad that it is hard to breath.

So far, we have had 3 silkie hens hatch out a clutch of eggs. The funny part is that all of the hatches have been out of the same nest and after the first one, I pulled all the eggs that didn't hatch. I didn't see but a few eggs in the nest after the 2nd silkie hen hatched a clutch and moved them away from the nest, but the 3rd silkie hen apparently knew there were still viable eggs in the nest because she took over then nest and about a week later hatched her clutch of chicks. There are silkie roos running loose with the hens, but judging by the color on some, the bantam EE roo may be the daddy for at least part of them.

Good morning friends and neighbors!

It`s going to be another hot one today, 105°F is the predicted high.

More than 93,400 acres have burned in fires across the state since Friday.

Lets keep those in harm`s way in our thoughts and prayers!

Les, Teva's going to be so worn out by the time she gets off work. The mental strain would really get to me trying to organize the impossible. Good thing she's female, men have a rough time pulling off the organizational tasks

Mike, the little OEGB mix *lived* in one of those live traps? The poor little thing.
Robin, those darling little Silkies make me want to hatch out some of my Silkie's eggs! I've got 2 Cochin/Ameraucana & 2 Faverolles/Orloff eggs in the incubator now. I've been wanting to hatch those mixes out for a long long time & never have. My daughter hatched out (against my wishes) a Cuckoo Marans/Orloff mix a few months ago that's gorgeous! He's the black and white barred of the cuckoo Marans with brown splotches mixed in all over. I'm really anxious to see what a Faverolles/Orloff mix looks like and I figured I can find a place here for all 4 if they happen to all hatch.

No, I forgot when I visited my regular doc (or his pa, I think) today. She took a pic and shared it with my doctor and both think it is moving in the right direction, and both think it is a recluse. I do have a followup next Friday, but I'll be there quicker if it gets worse and can bring it up then. It hasn't boiled up or broken open yet, but I can tell there is dead flesh. I touch the part that looks the worst and feel nothing, the puffy outer areas are a different story.

Thanks to you for the great advice, again. And Nana, for yours, and the knowledge that you had one and lived through it fine. LOL
Buster, hubby was bitten by a brown recluse once redoing the electric in our church's sancutary. He was in the attic working when he got bit. He took our daughter to her physical therapy appt and the PT said he could make it better for him faster than the meds he was on. Hubby thought he was joking but he wasn't. He tazered his hand where the bite was 3 times. It healed really quickly after that. Up to that point it was so slow in healing hubby was getting worried about it. I am sure you could find someone more than happy to tazer your leg, lol.

Finally home from Florida three days before I left for Texas and now home for two before I we leave for Omaha,NE. Those fires sure made me nervous!!! We have never left the kids overnight before by themselves until this last weekend. Of course the fires decide then to hit. I knew with how dry it was it was going to happen before the summer was over. I was so proud Kurt got all the sprinklers out and all the hoses and hooked up as many as he could around all the pens and the house. That is the one good thing about running the sprinklers for the birds the grass in the back yard is nice and green and since we have the metal roof on the house now I don't worry about blowing embers as much. But I will feel better when we rid our property of ALL the cedars. MIL will be staying with the kids this week while we take Nathanael to Omaha to see his transplant team. It will be a few days of test and whatnot for the poor kid. Of course he is all excited because instead of staying in the hotel at the hospital we are staying off site this year so he can swim at the hotel, lol. I guess that makes up for it all because he is already packed and ready to go.

Birds are doing good we didn't loose any in about a week. My CW roo is back to acting his normal self and I hope to move him and his girl to a new pen soon. I need to turn the last batch of outside keets loose but got to see how many females in what colors that I will keep penned for next years breeding. I only had the 3 lone keets hatch from the last set of eggs. Went through the eggs though and most were not fertile so that explains alot. I didn't candle them this last set because I was gone so much and hubby didn't think to do it. Nathanael has 5 eggs left in the incubator, I don't think one will hatch but the others have a good chance if he keeps them turned and Kurt keeps an eye on the humidity in the incubator while we are gone this week. He is excited that now his columbian OEGB pullet is laying. Guess I will let him set one more dozen of eggs before I tell him that is it for the year, lol. Hard to tell those little brown eyes no. Carl sorry we didn't get together this weekend, hubby didn't get in until late due to fires up near the tulsa area Sunday so no time to do anything.

Well off to do my one day of work this week, we were off yesterday for Employee Appreciation Day and I am off the rest of the week for Omaha. I will have to get back to work next week so I can rest! LOL

True it will not be as fast to catch but the tin is very thin and heat goes through it and ignites the wood underneith. Remember, trailer houses are fully encased in tin and look how fast they go up. Plus the paint on the surface burns very good as well. I imagine the nails or screws used to secure the roof conducts heat deep into the wood below, like putting a nail into a baked potato to make them cook faster.

Some of the tin roofs that I see installed also have foam insulation installed between furring strips used to hold the nails, very flamable as well.

A good point that they brought up last night on the news was that once the electricity went out those with a well had no water. Another good reason for a generator, even a small one that could be tucked inside a well house to run the pump/

We both like pressure like that. The job that I start next week is going to be a challenge. The company has not had an on-site mechanic for a very long time. I imagine service records are nonexistant or incomplete and I figure that it will take from 6mos to a year to get everything straightened back up.

Oh and before the night was over she had helped make-up three trains and sent them down the line. She is about the only driver there that doesn't mind assisting and she has learned a lot since she started.

And to think that she used to ask me what was so interesting "about a darned ol' train" LOL

Morning all, last couple of days my son and I have been helping my friend clean up the burned out barn he lost, Dakota has done the majority of the work, AZI set in the shade and assist!!! I move trucks and trailers and load small stuff but I feel like I am atleast contributing something, my friend saved his home and all his vehicles but his Bass boat, it was insured but the barn, chicken house and old house wasn't, we have hauled 2 picku and trailer loads of tin and this morning two cars and a pickup load of burned appliances, one of the cars was his dad's 1961 Plymouth that they were restoring and had to the primer stage, he said his dad bought it new. Sad but we are helping do what we can and it is appreciated! I want to thank all of you for keeping Glencoes people and firefighters in your prayers! We lost a RIR Rooster yesterday to the heat! have lost my NN rooster and one hen, down to two young hen NNs if someone needs them, they are nice red young hens, lay good,Take $10 each for them. have a great day all, Lynn
