***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Ok. I've recommended Frontline for lice and mites for a long time now but this post on the Dorking thread at
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/118388/b-y-c-dorking-club/2290
has changed my mind. I Frontlined my Cochins and lost 2 of them the 2 wks following. My husband kept saying it could've been the Frontline and I brushed him off. Now I'm feeling a bit sick, these 2 (and the one I lost last spring) were my top favorite birds of all time. I wouldn't put so much stock into what this person says except she's a veterinarian and what she says makes sense.
Just in case I won't be using Frontline. I was only doing it as a preventative, that's what makes me feel even worse. There's no way of knowing if that's what killed my Cochins....but it's awful suspicious.
Here's her post:
(And for the record I've been looking for Dorking eggs for quite some time now if anyone knows of someone with them).

Frontline also made a dip and it has been subject of lawsuits through the years, it has killed cats, dogs and a friend of mine lost his entire flock after using it.

Here is an article about the spot-on lawsuits.

And a good read from our very own EPA.

There is a lady in Wyo. or somewhere near that has Dorking eggs. Sterling Meadows Hatchery in Ak. also had them the last I knew.

And Tori is a very pleasant person to deal with, if she doesn't have any eggs I bet that she can point you in the right direction. One of the few places too that i can tell you to say that I sent you.

Tori's NPIP number was one and she was solely responsible for getting the state of Alaska to start NPIP. Very proud of what my friend accomplished.

Thank you, Les! The link on her page must be an old link but I'm looking her up on google right now to try to find her, She's in AK but I don't think that would make a real big difference.
Very interesting links on the lawsuits. You're one of those people that would be awesome at Trivia Pursuit, you literally have facts floating around in your brain that the rest of us have to go look up. It always amazes me how much you know about so many subjects. You're like our very own BYC encyclopedia

So thank you!

Humph! Where is all this rain they were telling about coming all week long? we haven't gotten a drop here so far, I guess that's what I get for believing the weather guessers as Elbert calls them LOL, I hope everyone is having a great weekend, I'm staying busy mostly, As usual I have way too much going on and not near enough time to get much of it done but I was looking forward to having the excuse of getting rained out to justify an extended break :) ah well, maybe that will happen tomorrow, Later all

Pond renovation is finished. We had two separate ponds each in a 40 acre section. Water would run off into both but also down between the two ponds meaning we were losing a lot of water for those two ponds even though it would run into one of our lower ponds in another section. We wanted the ponds enlarged and a terrace built between the ponds to catch the water and allow it to flow out when these two ponds were full. Also needed a low incline on the terrace since we bale these sections as well as graze them.

We went from this
North pond

and the South pond

to This
North pond has a dam that is 4 feet higher and a terrace on the far east end that diverts water.

The south pond has rebuilt dam on the north side and excavated 2 feet below the water level on the east. The dirt pushed out to the left (south) will be moved by hubby to change a spillway on another pond on the property.

The gray area is the terrace and trench running between the ponds..covered with grass and topsoil waiting for a good shower. You can see the new north pond dam just past those trees.

Tom Walters spent 3 days: 17 hours on a dozer and 6.5 hours with an earth mover and only charged $2400 for the job. He was quick, accurate and fair.....great man to work with...out of Prague.

So far has been a dark gloomy day, but only seen a few sprinkles. The rain just began falling as I typed! It is pouring now!
Nana hope you get a good rain and fill up your new rebuilt pond.

Cathy hope you had a good birthday!

Buster- josh didn't make it to the sale. He was asleep @ his office until almost 10. We already have 2 trailers- 16ft & a small enclosed tool trailer for the rent houses. He would have been looking for tpost & anything else we couldn't live without. Hope you we're able to get a good deal on a trailer.

Girls wanted to go to concert @ frontier city tonight, but I voted to stay dry inside. DH training class graduates next Friday so for the next 4 wks he should be around the farm more. I am thankful when he makes it home more than 2 nights a wk! Nice to have someone to share the chores with & to fix things that go wrong!

It rained near 1/2 inch this morning. Got my aunt and cousin seen off today, they should be back in CT this evening, she needs to set up her classroom and be ready to start teaching Mon. I am tired it has been a looooong week.

There are a few that have talked about it on the feed thread. For a small amount of chickens sprouts & microgreens could be a good option for treats. Most feed recipes contain wheat, soy & corn plus other ingredients. Could be challenging to grow all the feed for your flock.

Why grow grains??? Green matter, also known as Fodder can be grown hydroponicly in a few tubs with no soil. Haven't tried it myself yet but it's coming sometime next summer. Bean sprouts, alfalfa sprouts and others can be fed hydratred or dried and fed.

I mean if you really want to wait 3 to 6 mos. for grains to mature.......

Not picking on you jcat, your post translated better when it came to posting what I did. LOL

Got the perfect trailer for my MPU. Short, wide, and lightweight with a grill floor. Plenty of room to fit the processing table on one side, plucker and scalder on the other, and kill station across the front. Also, ran into my neighbor who offered to sell his 16' landscaping trailer for less than they were going for at the auction, plus in better condition. So, all day I had in mind a top price I was willing to go.

And I picked up a great cage!

Overall, a great day at the auction.
