Well got lots done yesterday. I had told everyone I was going home from church and having a "me" day but got outside to feed and water birds and found sooooo much to do, lol. So the little guys helped me get things in the back yard all cleaned up. Nathanael put up heat lamps for his little OEGBs (I swear they are all spoiled!) he was afraid they would get to cold. Then I got to raking and taking down the birds summer free ranging fencing. It is all bare dirt now so need to find a new area to fence for them and then figure out how to get them to said area to roam. Then of course dh got involved and took down a tree that died this summer (big oak I hated to loose). The little boys were so much help! Why oh why do they have to turn into moody teenagers after this age when they are so helpful?????



Man these two can gather the wood for a good little fire!



Yes it looks like that pine tree at the back of dh's truck is going to die too. Not sure what is up but all the pines and the oaks are dying so quickly all of a sudden!

Does it have 5 toes? Easy way to tell if it is a silkie!

Yup, well heres the funny thing. It has five toes on ONE foot and four on the other? So I dont know if its supposed to really have 4 or 5??

There are several breeds that have five toes on each foot as well as leg and foot feathering. Silkies are supposed to have black skin, beaks, legs and toes, but occasionally one doesn't. This one doesn't look quite like a silkie to me, but it could be. It isn't too rare that a chicken that is supposed to have five toes on each foot will have only four on one or both feet.

Thanks, good info. Just the more and more I look at "Sultan" chicks, the more they resemble each other. I HATE THE WAITING GAME!!! it makes me so anxious!!

I bought a 5 RIR's from a guy who said they were 2 yrs old & said they were laying good & would lay 300 days out of the year. I brought them home & have them free ranging. They go back to the coop at night to roost, it's been 3 weeks now & not a single egg

What's going on, HELP!!

Are you sure they are 2 years old? or could they possibly be "retired" egg layers?

We have several dz RIR I promise none of mine lay 300 eggs a yr. when chickens go to a new home they need time to adjust, since they are free ranging they could be laying out in the yard. With about 40+ hens in my main coop I am only getting 8 eggs a day now that it is getting cold & days are short egg production will not be at its peak.

Well, our EE's look pitiful and aren't laying... Molting, moving, and getting that new pecking order hasn't been good on them. Have them separated from the rest for now, but free range together of course.

From Drumright, so not far from you? And yes I'd love to have a HUGE coop but it's not in the budget right now.. Going to make due with what we can for now!
