***OKIES in the BYC III ***

i am a sucker for cochins and silkies, and faveroles, but for sheer enjoyment and pets- cochins and silkies for sure- here is one of my silkies,

there are friendly breeds, the dominques- black and striped and can be sexed at birth, so that makes it easier- not to be confused with barred rocks who tend to have 'attitude'..LOL!

and your duck needs a friend too, so he has a swimming buddy!!
That silkie is adorable! : ) Are they good egg producers?
So far my little girl is pretty friendly. And she just took that duck in as her own. She bosses it around and sleeps with it at night. The duck's best friend is the chicken. lol. But we have tossed around getting another duck. We can't tell what sex our duck is yet so I thought I would wait to see. I don't think I want a breeding pair.

good idea on the duck, they are very easy to integrate with other ducks, a boy will have a curled tail feather eventually- silkies lay small eggs, about every other day- but they are hard to determine sex on too- have you ever been to mypetchicken.com? they have a breed selection tool based on what traits you want- i always look for docile and can handle confinement- not that ever bird of a specific breed will fit it always, but it will give you a good basis for what you are looking for

Tracy,
I found out today from DH that these were in Blanchard, not Edmond. But I am sure they are u pand over your way too. DH saw one chase a deer thru our yard about 6 years ago. Joe came right back inside and let the cat have the whole place for as long as he wanted.

sounds about my speed!LOL!

My silkie broodies continue to hatch babes; one or two every day or so. Each of the three pens that are hatching has one parent that is a showgirl, but one has a showgirl roo, a showgirl hen and two silkie hens. In the last three weeks, they've successfully hatched 20 showgirls and 9 regular silkies. Tiny baby showgirls are really cute!

I'll have showgirls at the Shawnee show and sale the second weekend in December. A few will be adults and the rest will be about 2 months old.

I know there is one in my future. Now that I have a Cochin "layer" pen (I know that is kind of absurd) I can keep a girl in with the cochins I am not breeding.

We trapped a momma with 5 tiny kits on her back a few years ago. I know the litter can have up to 8 during a good year. With the drought, I wonder about the litter size.
Since you are catching them so quickly, do they appear to be young?
Possums only have even numbers of kits in a litter so she must have lost one. Also all the babies in one litter are all the same gender. - Very strange and kind of unevolved critters they are!

Robin, your little rumpless sure is cute. I don't knoe Ameraucana/EE/Auracanas well but I say "pullet" too. You will have to show us more pics as she/he grows.
