***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I'm going to quit having Thursdays ... woke up this morning to my khaki campbell girl headless. WHY is it always our favorite birds they get? Not sure what got her but now we're building an emergency shelter for the ducks on top of everything else.

I don't know whether to cuss or cry or both. If I owned a gun I know what I'd be doing tonight instead of sleeping though ...

I am so sorry you lost your bird.

This little girl hatched last month. I was pretty sure she was a girl when she hatched, but now it's official. I can put a pink bow on her head.

Not too sure about these yet. I'm thinking girls, but I won't know for sure till three or four weeks old. I had a third chick hatch that was a lot more silver all over and I was pretty sure he was a boy, but he didn't make it.

I really like the little one on the left. He/she/it looks spunky.

I'm still holding out hope for a boy from the hatch in the bator currently, but it's day 23 and nothing so far. :( I'm not impressed with fall hatches at this point.

Hate to hear about your loss Erin. I would be upset too. About 20+ years ago I had a small flock of mixed chickens. one night the girls went to raising cane. I woke up grabbed my shotgun run outside big nasty possom had been after my girls. Blasted it 4 times before he quit trying to get away. He hadn't killed any of them but 3 had slobberd up heads. My dad told me possums usualy go for their heads.

Erin--

That sooo sucks about your hen! Have you tried a trap? We caught a racoon in one earlier this summer. Catches them live, then you have to get rid of it.. A can of tuna works well for bait.

Mitzi, I use visquine on the North and West facing sides of my pens and it makes a huge difference. The sides average about 6 feet high and I have shade cloth on the tops. It is really comfortable inside them. I also don't have any of the coop's openings face the North. I have door on the coops but almost never close them unless I am trying to teach them to go in there at night.

Rebecca had a great idea for heating waterers in the winter: Use an electric candle warmer in a shallow cookie tin. The warmer is low watage like the bulbs most people use in their tin heater set ups but it can be hard to find tins deep enough. The candle warmers are only about an 1 1/4" and you can find them at garage sales and ect.
