nnbreeder - I am testing the MalayX hens to see if they will take care of each other's chicks. This evening, I put the second hen into a long cage with the first one that had about 13 chicks last week. The second hen had left the nest with a chick that hatched today, abandoning the guinea eggs she was sitting on. I hadn't realized she had any chicken eggs beneath her. Anyway, I put her in with her newly hatched chick and some of the guinea eggs, then added a poult, three keets and a pheasant chick that hatched today to her nest. Hopefully, since it was just getting dark when I added everyone, she will accept them (and they will have enough survival instinct to stay beneath her tonight) I am having terrible mortality rates in the brooder, so am hopeful the hen will do better than if I were to put everyone in the brooder.

Good night, Stray
Get some rest - it is hard to get caught up on your sleep if you miss very much of it and not getting enough sleep will make you feel old beyond your years.

(disclaimer: I used to think I only needed 4-5 hours sleep each night, as long as I got extra sleep on the weekends.)

Monty : have fun on your trip.

City : Be safe down there in Texas.

Sorry about everybody losing their little ones. Has anybody heard from our good buddy Stimpy!!!, Calling Stimpy scweltch over.

Ocean : Congrats are in order, we always want to see pic's of pretty little baby girls.

Buster : I think there is a poops picture thread somewhere but I forgot where, sorry. It was a super time and such a great weekend to spend with our chicken friends, next one should be good too.

morning all- looks like the walls are going up today! Woohoo!
my pullet still has a swollen crop- she is eating, pooping and loves being held in my lap, not sure what to do with her.. any ideas?

sorry about the chicks- have you tried feeding them a gruel of the chick feed? maybe that would help to keep them hydrated and calories?

Morning All.
Al hows that new coop deluxe comming. Are you ready to stock it yet? hope your back to feeling good.

Another hot and sweltering day here in Tn. I feel for those losing chicks,I am too. I think its the humidty. I was thinking yesterday my mom always said ,"Don't buy or hatch chicks in may,may chicks are sleepy chicks." I'm thinking she was right!
Got to sort out my pigeons today,Have some sold and will take a bunch to auction sat. Thinning down the rollers, making more room for the arabian trumpeters.
You all have a great day, enjoy being in Okla! Missing it and wishing I was there!

I am still really missing Maggie. She would jump on my shoulder when I went out to scratch them. She always had a smile for me....

I am giving hens electrolytes and am going to hook up their mist system today... Not that it will be too beneficial with this humidity....but with the constant "breeze" I am thinking it might help a little. Everyone is dragging! Panting and wings dragging....My wings are even dragging. I am thinking it wass hotter last year and I had LESS problems....what's up with that?

Miss you guys.....

I have heard people can freeze 2 liter bottles of water and they will lay next to them to keep cool- mine will probably be going in the coop this week- will have a fan in there too.... what else can you do to protect them with the heat?
