nnbreeder - I am testing the MalayX hens to see if they will take care of each other's chicks. This evening, I put the second hen into a long cage with the first one that had about 13 chicks last week. The second hen had left the nest with a chick that hatched today, abandoning the guinea eggs she was sitting on. I hadn't realized she had any chicken eggs beneath her. Anyway, I put her in with her newly hatched chick and some of the guinea eggs, then added a poult, three keets and a pheasant chick that hatched today to her nest. Hopefully, since it was just getting dark when I added everyone, she will accept them (and they will have enough survival instinct to stay beneath her tonight) I am having terrible mortality rates in the brooder, so am hopeful the hen will do better than if I were to put everyone in the brooder.
