Yeah, there are a lot of depressed squirrels out there at this time of year. I don't know if it's the upcoming holidays or what, but it seems that there is a squirrel on every corner just waiting to commit suicide. I think it is our moral duty to help them (and their cousins, the raccoons

Good heavens! I had no idea squirrels were in such crisis!.... Surely there is a government program to assist them! We could help them buy nuts... and pay for their counseling. They could sit on their little porches drinking little miniature cans of beer and we could support them and all their little squirrrel babies... but I suppose that is another thread entirely.

Ha! The tree rats around here aren't depressed, or hungry! I am surrounded by pecan, black walnut, hickory and acorn trees. They are prolific little critters that like to throw nuts at me when I'm standing under their particular tree doing something. The first time I hit one, I felt bad. I have since decided if they are retarded enough to change direction when they have cleared my truck to begin with, they deserve it.
Opossums? I will purposely hit...nasty creatures that have cost me plenty of chickens, and whose poop is poisonous to my horses.
Racoons? I'd probably hit one of them on purpose as well, since they can be quite destructive and determined.
Varmits just need to stay clear of me...lol.

Coons and 'possums are two varments that I don't mind killing at all. Anyone who has ever witnessed what they can do to a chicken will understand. Anyone who doesn't understand can kiss my ... well, they can just take me off of their Christmas Card list.

LOL...you can stay on my Christmas list, Stimp!

I had a possum pull a gorgeous little barred cochin bantie roo off the roost, break his neck, and leave him flopping in the chicken yard. What a senseless waste!
I've had coons literally pull birds through the chicken fence, and the birds didn't fit too well. Fortunately, I haven't had coon problems here...knock on wood and cross my fingers and toes! Hawks and possums take turns harrassing me, though. Oh and snakes....jeesh...snakes! Ain't no good snakes but a dead snake in my book....at least around my coops!

My neighbor had a big ol' boar coon living under an old shed on his place. I asked him several times to trap the thing and get rid of it, but he thought it was neat to have him running around loose.

One night I caught him coming over my fence. I whistled and when he looked up, I put a .22 round right between his eyes. I added one more for good measure and then tossed him back into the neighbors yard.

They are fine in the wild. When they come to my house they are no longer fine, they are just another pest.

Hey Big Al... was gonna call y'all last night. We went to the beautiful town of Lawton! Guess what for??? Lumber! Guess why??? More coops! Mike has decided (and it's HIS program now, ya know) that we need a couple more COOPS! Can you believe THAT! So there we were in the middle of the dang night loading up 2X4s and plywood! HA! It's official... Mike has been infected with the disease! "The Squeaky family needs their own coop..." " and you never know... better to have more room..." HA! An economic crisis and HE decides we need coops! I go to Dallas for one lousy week and the husband has usurped the hens! HA! The little rascals stole his heart while I was gone! So now we will be building coops forever. Bless God the weather is a bit cooler.... the weekends are gone. If they were women I would be in deep weeds! HA HA! Where did ya get your DE?

I use a sifter to apply to the shaving in the nest and I mix with water very thin and apply to roost. Our Run bottlenecks and we shut the door to the coop and get them all into the bottle neck and do each seperately around vent and under wings, then release into the run, this way we make sure every bird gets taken care of. I also use it on the dog and cat.

OT: the broody we left out side on Saturday had 6 eggs 1 died mid hatch and 1 hatched on Saturday had 4 eggs left gave up and told hubbie this AM we needed to remove the eggs and put her back in the Flock went to feed and there is another baby! But she is off the nest again so we will probably go ahead and take the chicks and move mom tonight. And the other broody is set to go early next week.
