Les--what DO you feed if not scratch? I feed lay pellets and the birds avoid them like the plague...it doesn't seem to matter what brand I try either. Any help here would be great as as of now they are eating (read: picking out what they like) scratch. They are also eating bugs and grass as they free range...maybe this is why they could care less about the lay pellets?
If you want them to eat the laying pellets you have to take everything else away from them. I was doing the same thing, feeding them everything and they wouldnt eat their layer. I am now giving them only layer in their feeders and in the evening I go out with a handful of scratch for each pen. I will be giving them 2 or 3 handfuls of scratch come winter. I have been doing this for 2 weeks and already have seen major improvement in their laying.
I quit feeding the so called scratch for the same reasons Les, I now only feed gracked corn only as a treat very sparingly and to only some of my birds. Sjarvis00 is right they will just pick through what they like and leave the rest if you mix feed, my rule of thumb is give them what they NEED not what they want or like.

Every now and then I catch a skunk too, when I set the trap I tie a long rope to the trap so I can drag it off to a safe distance. remember skunks are very blind and can only see a foot or so directly in front of them. Then they way I rig the trap I can raise the door and let them walk off a good far ways while I follow them, then I introduce it to Mr 12 gauge, problem solved.
