Earlybird chances are you will have several different breeds before settling on just one. And you may have several breeds too who knows?

This group here will help you as much as possible and feel free to ask questions, but all you read or see doesn't compare to actually having birds. Many here are up late so there is usually help available.

Do you often go to OKC? There are many members in or near OKC.

Can you call and have one of the nurses take your mom's temperature? Did she ever get totally rid of the pneumonia?

That is a very generous offer, Shavon! Rhode Island Reds are very pretty darker auburn birds - consistent layers of big brown eggs. Mine are some of the friendliest in my flock. I think you would be happy with this breed, Early - they are hardy, and as a bonus, they're the state bird of Rhode Island!

Mine came from Atwwods, who gets theirs from Ideal, so they aren't the dark reda color. I have some pics of them on my BYC page. They aren't great because I took them with my phone, but they do show their colors pretty well.

You're right Shavon - my RIRs came from Ideal, too. While they aren't the really beautiful dark dark mahogany color of SQ RIRs, they are darker in color than the Production Reds, which Ideal also sells. The color may be the only real difference between these hatchery birds - otherwise they look very much alike. Hmm...that makes me wonder if Ideal's production reds are better egg layers than their RIRs...

eta: By the way, that's a 2-day old Rhode Island Red chick in my avatar!

Memaw's peach cobbler was pretty tasty. I am not sure anyone else got any, some big guy hogged it all.

Hey Monty... your too funny. I just bought a gallon of peaches this evening to make a cobbler to take to work. Then went out to mess with the birds and I'm just too dang tired to make it now.

Anyway, thanks all for the info on building pens. I have access to get some chain link fence...the roles of it have to be dug out of the grass at a fellows house...been waiting for the snakes to go VERY FAR AWAY...wait maybe Teach can come and catch the snakes...

Monty do you like using the chain link or the chicken wire better? We've used some chain link but just to keep the little ones from getting through the cattle panels. We want to fix the fence right so no critters can dig under. Man, there is just too much to figure out...almost gets depressing.

Hey MAllen...thanks for the info....your pens and building look great....I just wish we were as tallented as you and others...my DH is an auto mechanic...not a builder...LOL Maybe I'll sneak over with City to help get those coops out of your way.

My mom works for the state, her office building is off 28th and Lincoln just outside the capital complex. I live around by Tinker AFB.

Early, I have EEs and mutt eggs in the 'bator... when they hatch, you're welcome to some babies. Can't promise what they'll be, but that's half the fun. They're going to be my LF layers, along with a black sex link and 2 unknowns that are currently in a camo coop in my back yard.

I'm also picking up a trio of MFCs (mille fleur cochins, bantam project birds) this coming weekend... they'll be living in a dog house (I have one big enough to fit a 190+ lb St. Bernard with room for him to turn around) inside of a chain link dog run until I can get the coop built. Considering soccer practice ended late tonight (lots of canceled practices due to rain), all the light was gone by the time I got home. J swears he'll get it built on Friday since he's off work all day, but I'll be honest... I'm not holding out hope

Well guys, I'm headed to bed. The kids go back to school tomorrow. (Yeah, no more flu.) I have to be up early. No more sleeping in.

Samantha, I sent you an email so I didn't lose your address.

Night peeps.
