Jeannie...my grown kids.. that don't care for our chicken project..want to know why we aren't going to have my two tom turkeys for Thanksgiving. I told them I'd have to hurt them if they came near my birds. LOL For some reason my kids just haven't aquired our love of the birds. All they see is poop and stink. They think chickens are for old folks. LOL

Do you expect that the eggs will all hatch at once, or did one of the Mamas continue to lay in the nest after the first began brooding?

My experience with silkies and showgirls hatching and caring for chicks is mixed, especially with more than one Mama. Some will do very well, even with a roo in with them. You'll need to watch closely as they hatch. Some first-time Moms don't seem to understand that those noisy, moving things are what they've been working on for three weeks and push them out of the nest; sometimes even kill them (this doesn't only happen with silkies). They are VERY intent on hatching eggs. Others will fairly quickly move off the eggs to care for the chicks, leaving the nearly-hatched embryos to die. In some cases, one Mom will continue to brood the eggs while the other takes care of the chicks. Sometimes they fight over the chicks. You probably need to be ready to put them in a brooder if necessary. Once they decide to take care of the babes, both silkies and showgirls are excellent Mamas. I've also had successful family groups raising them, which is the way I really like to do it.

If they seem to be caring for the chicks, you'll need to put chick starter and a waterer in the pen with them, but they'll be ok for a day or so if you don't get it done right away. The Moms will definitely take them to both. You'll need to be vigilant of the waterer, as they'll teach the chicks to scratch for food an quickly fill the waterer with dirt/chips.

Hope this helps and you have a great hatch!

Good Morning (again).

Thought I would drop in before I get too busy! Betsy you are great at giving clear information, I wish I could do that. I seem to ramble but not as bad as Teach (LOL got ya).

Luv2~ My boys are the same way. They don't like my chickens but they also don't remember how they use to get eaten up by ticks & chiggers......Madison is a different story.

Barn~ Good Morning! Some days I feel the same way. I have to get to the feed store today also. I wonder if my little car can hold all that I need. (horses, goat, chickens)

shidalgo~ Should be your turn now right???

Jacks~ Good luck on your hatch, what ya hatching????

P&B~ Pink eggs huh??? I only have two EE's and one baby.....I think I might convert the next time I need to replace my layers...

Hope you get to feeling better, Quenston!

Mornin' folks. Fine chilly morning that it is. I had frost, for the first time this season, on my truck! Oriental broods are a-ok (as is everything else)!

Morning all!

Sooner - I know what you mean about the feed bill! We have five horses, three goats and 21 chickens. My feed bill is nearly $300/month - because the daughter's mare is such a hard keeper! (This does NOT include hay for the horses! - daughter is supposed to buy the hay)

Quenston - take care of yourself - remember baby steps! You sure don't want to spend Thanksgiving in the hospital! I'll send prayers your way!

Dee don't put a dollar amount on it!!! I work very hard at not paying attention to that part! LOL.

We don't have to pay for our hay for the most part thank goodness!

Q prayers going your way to feel better. Take advice start out walking!!! Take care big guy!

Here are a few pictures of the Welsummers I bought from you at POOPS. They are no longer chicks. Aren't they a handsome bunch?
