This is interesting. I don't think I remember reading about the 7th year with gardening, what you could do instead of not gardening at all (and maybe this is what you are saying) on the 7th year is rotate areas of your property where you have your gardens. You definitely should do this anyway with certain things like potatoes. You should put your potatoes in different place each year, so that way to reduce on any diseases toward the plants. I also have been the last two years using the companion method. It is where you use certain plants that help each other out. The Native Americans have used this too and call it the three sisters method. The three sisters method was with Corn, beans and squash (instead of squash it could also be cucumbers or anything from that similar family). Corn pulls a lot of Nitrogen out of the soil and the beans put nitrogen into the soil, and the corn acts as a trellis for the beans or squash to grow on. However, there are many other plants that benefit from each other by growing them together. They can confuse the insects so that way you don't have as much of a problem with certain pests that are attracted to certain plants, but don't like others. For example, I planted this year basel, tomatoes, asparagus, and cilantro together. Then I had another area that was peppers, onions, carrots, lettuce, and eggplant. Before this year I never had good luck with the carrots, but I had a huge amount of them with this method this year. I don't know for sure if it was the method or just good luck and cooler weather this last summer, but hey I had organic garden fresh carrots. I have also read that it is not as good to just rototill the garden every year, but instead just keep heaping the compost on top and let the earth worms do their job. When we lived in Dallas, we had black hard rock clay. I tried many methods to add compost to my gardens and the best way I came up with is what I call a Lasagna type method. I would weed eat all the weeds down to the dirt (actually I had my husband do this for me), then I would layer newspaper or card board and wet it down. Next I would start layering different things like grass clipping, leave, and horse manure and shavings from the stalls at a nearby horse ranch. To top it all off I would put a mulch on top that was was more ground up, normally a hard wood and the cheapest I could find. If I was going to plant in it right away and not necessarily vegetable plant, I would use a landscaper mix around each plant and then just keep them watered well until they got established. I had great success with this and then the next year and afterwards I could dig in the dirt of those gardens with my own hands and because the soil became so rich and manageable. Before doing this I would never see any worms, but after doing this there would be tons of worm castings (their manure) which is also a great fertilizer. We ended up starting a Landscape company and did this for all of our customers, it also helped to save money on installing gardens, because a lot of those materials were free.

Happy Gardening,

Kate

It was a joke about having to go to a hospital out in the Pandandle. I thought he might really be having to go to Amarillo or come to OKC.
I picked Slapout because I know that about the only thing there is a store. We used to stop there on the way to our Colorado.
Maybe I should have said Tyrone.

Tyrone is the Cultural Center of the Universe, but Beaver is the Cowchip Capital of the World.

Thank you! Yes, I just pm'd her back. I really don't have much available for sale right now except for lots of beautiful roosters & some cuckoos & splash, but we should have lots of chicks & eggs this Spring ... if we survive the winter!

Well, time for me to go feed & water & then go to work. Hopefully I get to visit online again tonight.

P.S. I really enjoy reading what everyone has to post. I love visiting (even if only online) with all our newfound Okie chicken buddies!

I know there is someone famous from Tyrone. Can't remember who though.
It is such a humble little town that they don't brag about thier celebrities so I guess that is why there is no "Home of " sign there.

Yes, I did used to have a sign in Tyrone - at my recent request it has been replaced by some warning signs. So now, if you're traveling west on Hwy 54, there's a sign in Tyrone that says "Teach97 - 10 miles ahead" Heading east, the sign reads "Teach97 - 10 miles behind"

Well I guess I had better bundle up and get outside and start taking care of all the outdoor chores on my day off from school and before I start hunkering down and studying for those darn Finals next week, ugggg. I am going to get coops all secured for new chickens, yeah I can't wait. I know my daughter is super excited too. She is really missing her Buddy we lost. I am sure she will become attached to the new ones. I will check in when I come back in to warm up. Everybody stay warm!
