Matt, here is the information from P&B about the DARP processor, which I think is fairly near you...

"They are between Tahlequah and Peggs. Raymond Jones, the DARP Foundation, 918-207-7181"

If you don't have the same problem with an employer who won't let you off without at least a week's notice like faerie does, it might work for you. They might be worth a call at least.

Glad you found the book useful. I do process my own birds now, so that part was very valuable. And I don't plan on selling mine either, but still found it useful. I don't know of any other book on raising meat birds, so it is valuable just for that.

Matt, I didn't get my sweet corn planted until after July 4 last year and it made an awesome crop in late September.

regarding processing chickens, I received an email today from D.A.R.P. because they are planning to deliver frozen chickens to OKC on February 4, and it included a link to their new home page. The home page doesn't mention processing birds for others or that you can buy day old Hubbard chicks from them for about 50 cents each, but it does have contact information on it. Here is the link http://www.greatchickens.com/Home_Page.html

Been watching the weather forecast and starting to worry about the weather on Saturday for the Cement show. Is there any heat in the building? (I hope, I sure don't like cold weather. I hate ice and snow even more.).

Grace....when are your silkie hens coming to Moore?

Fletchepoulrtyauction....Your frizzle rooster needs normal feathered hens. Frizzle X Frizzle you will have naked chickens......like the rooster pictures a few posts back. You will have to knit sweaters.

Thanks for the info ya'll!! Just spoke to Brian at DARP, nice guy! He told me to call him a week before I want to bring the birds to him so that he could schedule them. He said that to go with my work schedule I could drop them off on a Monday and pick them up vacuum packed and hard frozen the following Monday, USDA inspected. I told him I'd be bringing about 50 cornish rock crosses, he said that his crew would have them vacuum packed, start to finish & in the deep freeze in about 30 minutes!

Cost is $2 per bird and that includes everything, butchering, vaccum packing, USDA inspection, and freezing. To me that sounds like one heck of deal, saves me from having to do all the processing and dealing with all the waste. Brian said that they compost all the waste, but my compost piles are all organic & I don't want to put all that meat waste in there and deal with all that comes with it.

The only down side is now I'll have to buy Maria a larger freezer.... it's always sumpin....

Not at you, MAllen, but Bryan at DARP is the guy who kept saying that he *could not tell me a week in advance* when I could bring my chickens in! So I ended up losing over HALF trying to get them in, and P&B volunteered to show me how to butcher so I wouldn't lose the rest!!

Matt....there was a processing place at Jay. I talked to the guy last fall and his prices were very reasonable. I'll see if I can get his number and post it for you.

I was planning on getting my cornish rocks from Murray McMurray, there I can get 25 straight run for $1.79 each, but thought I would ask you guys if there is a better place to get them?

After talking Brian at DARP ... well, here's the rub.

I can buy the chicks for $1.79 each, processing would be $2 each, so I would have $3.79 into them not including feed, time, & trouble.

On the other hand, I can drive to his plant and buy his cornish rocks already processed and frozen for $1.25 a pound, so for a 3 pound bird I would pay $3.75 ... 4 cents less than buying and processing chicks, and I save the cost of feed.

Obviously the better way to go is to just drive up there and buy 25 of his, no?

Howdy ya'll.....

Sitting here in the hospital room with the wife as she recovers. I hate hospitals. At Least I can catch up on looking at chickens lol.

Got my contract for the new house. Should start moving in sometime 1st of Feb..... I'm excited.

Hope all is well with the fellow BYCers.
