Well, J is home from drill and playing his game, the kids are lined up in front of the loveseat where J and I are sitting and are watching a movie... probably NOT the best movie choice, but it's one I can stand to watch. Don't ask what it is...

I'm in the process of corrupting my sister's kids!

Roy - that's sounds fine. If the weather holds out, I won't be in town next week anyway. I will be back before the weekend though. Well at least I'll be home Saturday morning. I might stay Friday night in OKC, don't know yet. I will be getting back fairly late Friday evening. Of course all this depends on whether my flight is cancelled or not.

I'm thinking of surprising DH with some more RIR hens. I want some that are laying, yet fairly young. Currently I have three 9 month olds, and four 6 month olds. I want some around these ages.

I think the sale in CVille would be terrific in good weather. I noticed that one of the sellers had erected a small tarp shelter (kept the rain off anyway). With all the mud it was hard to get around to see what people had. I checked the extended forecast for Collinsville for next Saturday. It looks like snow Thursday and Friday, cloudy and cold Saturday, and more snow on Monday. Do you think the bad weather will drive the prices down, or up?

Boiling eggs for the week's breakfast... I like eggs for breakfast, but I never wake up early enough to cook!

They're kinda like "pet" fish. Neat to look at, but pretty much useless.

Some folks will add them to large fly pens or aviaries to clean up leftover feed/seeds.

just ornamental, a novelty to have, most keep them in the house in a bird cage like parakeets.

Ok here is what you do. According to industry standards a brown egg layer will consume 4oz of feed daily.

take 50 x 16 to get how many ounces in a bag of feed. 40 if bought at Atwoods.

there are 800 ounces in a 50lb bag of feed.

I am going to use 10 dollars for the price of the feed, anyway you divide 10 by 800 which comes to .0125 which is what the feed costs per ounce.

Next take .0125 x 4 because the hen will eat about 4 oz. which is .05 or a nickle and if she lays daily that is what the egg will cost in feed.

Now I did say cost in feed, you still have water, equipment and labor to consider so 2.50 may be a good break-even for the small breeder. The big guys are automated so even though their equipment costs are higher their input costs for labor are much, much less and the equipment is figured for the life of the equipment.

dont the big companies split the day up with 2-12 hour "days" and 2-2hour nights" to get them to lay twice?
