I'll bet they are pretty. You seem very "chicken savvy" what seems to be your incubation problem? How many have you tried? I was losing some right at hatch time...I believe a too wet problem...at 40-50% humidity. I have backed down...actually doing "dry incubation" and only adding water when it gets below 25%. "They" say that 50% hatch rate is normal in serama. I am not satisfied with that and expect to do better.

Last year I was hatching with a hovabator genesis, this year I've been running a sportsman. However, my darlings haven't started laying for me so I haven't been able to test it out on them yet. I had no problems hatching everything else, just the serama and I generally ran the incubator on the dry side. For hatch time, I'd try and keep the humidity no more than 60%. Maybe it was the age of the birds? They weren't even a year old at the time.

PLEASE Don't think I'm being a jerk. I have a question because I don't know and haven't had any of them.
What do you like or dislike about the Serama breed? What are their strongest characteristic that you like? Dislike?

Just curious.

The embryos would develop all the way to about time to pip and then die. I'm not sure what the deal is/was. That is either too much or too little humidity. The aircells appeared large, so I'm guessing too little?

I like them because they are just really neat birds. So very tiny, smaller than oegb, and their attitude is right up my alley.

I don't know about others, but mine are fairly quiet and the cock's little crow is adorable.

It's just my personal feelings, but I just like little cutsy things that I can hold in my hands like a pet. I like the silkied ones best because "chickens with fur" are so different. They're way too little to eat, but I'm not raising them for food. You could eat the eggs, I suppose. They are about the size of regular bantie eggs. I just like them just as pets. I'm not allowed to have outdoor chickens...serama only need a very small indoor space, so it is a way I can still have chickens.

Strange. That is just what mine did, but my air cells were small, so I thought the chicks were too big to turn or were drowning. Will know after my next batch. I set eggs every week.

Hey Faerie! Egg laying is how I rate my favorites. How is that brown leghorn hen doing for you? And did I see that you got an australorp to add to your laying flock, too?

The australorp is still in quarantine and not laying yet. Also, somehow she managed to get a frostbit comb in a 50 degree room with low humidity! I have no idea what happened.

The LBLeghorn isn't laying yet. Just my black star, the GL wyandotte, the GS marans hen, and an unknown bantam egg layer.

Yesterday for Montana's birthday, she made a PECAN PIE

for ME. Actually she made 2 pies and one was to take to work with me for my buds. Darnest thing happened on the way to work, it disappeared out of my truck and never made it to my office. I have to admit, I didn't want them to think that she wouldn't make one for them. So, I never told them about the second pie. Aren't I a sweetheart for that?
